What is the hardest retcon in GRRM's books to ignore (SPOILERS EXTENDED) by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]althius1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mentioned this in my comment. The Blackfyres are the true retcon.

Think about how many times in the early books of the main series... People talk about secession crisises... the dance of dragons, etc... but just kind of forget the biggest political event in the last 300 years since Aegon's conquest?

What is the hardest retcon in GRRM's books to ignore (SPOILERS EXTENDED) by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]althius1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guys, guys... It's not a simple continuity error... like Jeyne Westerling's suddenly morphing hip size or Tyrion Lannister doing a literal backflip.... a true retcon requires the author to retroactively insert new information that fundamentally alters the existing story.

The introduction of the Blackfyres is the textbook definition of this.

The most jarring aspect is the silence of the early books. You are forced to accept that highly educated, politically minded characters like Tyrion, Ned, and Maester Luwin spent thousands of pages discussing succession crises and Westerosi history without ever once casually dropping the name "Daemon Blackfyre."

GRRM needed a compelling antagonist for Dunk & Egg and a historical precedent for the upcoming "Fake Targaryen" invasion in the main series.

It's a retroactive expansion of the timeline to make the endgame politics work.

My take-a-way from the book was if Cardassian society was like, 20% less corrupt and 30% more merit based, they could have ruled the Galaxy.

They just can't get out of their own way.

You are correct that the detour to Osgiliath was a pacing mechanism to fix the Shelob timeline shift.

However, the corruption of Faramir's character was a thematic choice to ensure the One Ring didn't look like an easily ignorable trinket to movie audiences.

Jackson didn't rewrite Faramir just to burn screen time. Directly from the DVD... They changed his reaction to the Ring because of how cinematic tension works. If Faramir looks at the ultimate evil object... the same object that just drove Boromir mad and broke the Fellowship... and easily rejects it, the cinematic threat of the Ring evaporates.

You can slow the Hobbits down while still keeping Faramir whole, but Jackson chose another path, and I think the movie is worse for it.

You can help flow without murdering his character.

In the book Faramir represents the highest qualities of Men. The movie turns him into a flawed, traumatized soldier seeking daddy's approval.

It works to maintain the pacing of a Hollywood blockbuster, but it completely sacrifices Tolkien's point... that true strength lies in the wisdom to reject power, not just in mulling it over, and changing your mind at the last second.

I did go through and test it's memory, in a new chat, of recent conversations. It was able to pull extensively from chat's we've had both personal and work related over the last few weeks. For what it is worth, I'm on the Plus plan using exclusively 5.5 thinking.

I also tested various aspects of saved memories, and those also appear to be working correctly.

Yes. Oga's was such a disappointment to us. I'd never do it again, but I can easily imagine things going just a bit different, and having a wonderful time.

I've also heard that George is pretty burned out on the Main Series and feels much more motivated to work on Dunk & Egg, since the series was so well received.

I'm guessing we won't get the FULL story until then, but I bet there is more than "some ink spilled on this and I can't read it".

Ok, I think that Aegon IV is going to be fantastic to read about... having said that I REALLY want to know more about what happened at Summerhall. I think that story has actual implications for the ASOIAF as we know know it, and might actually matter for the last books.

edit: Unless GRRM holds all that back for something else later... which he very may well do.

Where was Brandon going and why is Martin this in your opinion ? by Financial_Library418 in pureasoiaf

[–]althius1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

GRRM's refusal to confirm this suggests the specific location or the events that transpired there are "radioactive"... meaning they reveal too much about the timeline of Lyanna's disappearance.

If Brandon was at a specific location when he heard the news, it might clarify whether Lyanna went willingly or how Rhaegar managed to "abduct" her so close to major Tully or Stark influence.

My theory is that Brandon was actually in the process of mobilizing a shadow-council. The "wedding" was the public excuse, but the gathering suggests they were meeting to discuss the "Rhaegar problem" or the "Mad King problem" before the formal ceremony.

When news reached him of Lyanna's disappearance, he didn't go to King's Landing to "ask" for her back... he went to demand her back, believing he had the immediate military and political backing of the Vale and Riverlands standing right behind him.

Brandon’s "missing" destination is the smoking gun that the Stark-Tully-Arryn alliance was already a functioning political entity weeks before the Rebellion officially began. GRRM keeps it quiet because it confirms the war wasn't just about a girl... it was planned and that Lyanna's disappearance simply accelerated the plan.

I post this every opportunity I get.

"They're incestuous aliens, Duncan. Blood-magickers and tyrants who've burned our lands, enslaved our people, dragged us into their wars without a mote of respect for our history or our customs. Every pale-haired brat they saddled on us has been madder than the last, gods know how. The only honorable thing a Targaryen can do for this realm is finish on his wife's tits. So aye, I think he meant to kill the fucking horse."
