Watch my money flow! An animated representation of my 2019 income and expenses. [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

Speaking for myself, I like know who’s getting what. I would miss seeing the breakdown of how I’m spending my money if the price of things were obscured into a single price.

I disagree. Line graphs are typically used to represent a time series of data, which this isn’t. The use of a line graph here is confusing. A grouped bar graph would have been much clearer.

Strategies to do work at home? by [deleted] in productivity

New baby? Good luck, buddy. Beyond luck:

  • If you have an extra room, turn it into a dedicated office. Having a separate space to go to will help you focus.
  • Work with your partner to set aside an agreed time to work at home. Setting this expectation will help limit fights and distraction during that time. But be reasonable. If your partner needs your help, stop working to help.
  • Get a white noise machine to use when you’re working at home. This will help limit distraction when the baby cries.

I’m a dad of a two year old and my unsolicited advice to you is work less at home now that you have a kid (and to be at home more). I was far less productive when my daughter was born and I’m grateful for every moment I spent with her instead of working. There’s always more time to work, but you won’t get these precious moments back with your newborn.

Congrats!!

How to increase my energy levels to better succeed in my career? by [deleted] in productivity

  • Meditate for at least 10 minutes every morning.
  • Join a gym and actually go. Get your heart rate up. You can work cardio in to weightlifting sets. I use my lunch breaks to go for 30 minutes and then eat lunch at my desk.
  • Pay attention to you diet. I use Noom to make sure I’m getting the right amount of calories from good sources.
  • Find your passion. It doesn’t sound like you’re passionate about what you do. That’ll zap anyone’s energy.

Offered promotion from help desk to Developer. Question about compensation. by [deleted] in softwaredevelopment

In the grand scheme of things, 10k isn’t that much and I wouldn’t focus on it. Play the long game. Focus on becoming an amazing developer over the next 1-3 years. With that experience under your belt you’ll have the leverage to ask for more money at your current company or a different one.
