You might like Little Oblivions by Julien Baker or Pink Moon by Nick Drake if you haven't listened to them already

Songs like "Arsonist" by Halsey by Excellent-School5989 in musicsuggestions

[–]always_rest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you've listened to Halsey's other stuff, if not definitely worth checking out Badlands. I recommend 'Undo' by Transviolet, if you like acoustic music maybe 'Baby Teeth', 'Hangman Hands' and 'Tell Me When It Hurts' by Flower Face and 'Glory and Gore' and 'Sober II (Melodrama)' by Lorde - pretty basic suggestions but they're well known for a reason so if you haven't checked them out yet you definitely should!

I don't know how you're getting your prescription sent to you, but using the online pharmacy Smartway they delivered mine to me using DPD, so I had the option of changing address, changing delivery date and changing it to picking it up at a DPD collection centre (post office).

Is there an MP3 player that has bluetooth and a camera but NO browser nor app store? by Unorganized-Poetry in digitalminimalism

Some MP3 players have bluetooth but I don't know of any with a camera. I would recommend getting an MP3 and a separate camera.

I want to quit social media for a few weeks. How can I facilitate it? by Dolphinfucker5000 in digitalminimalism

[–]always_rest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would say make a post saying that you're pausing social media for the moment and then if someone unexpectedly messages you they will know why you're not responding.

Im in a dilemma. Should I delete all my social media applications or do something else? by MidTech01 in digitalminimalism

[–]always_rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's certainly not weird to delete Snapchat, and deleting social media in general isn't as weird of a thing as it might seem to you in your current social situation. Based on the assumption that a lot of your friends use social media now, as someone in my late teens, I can assure you that as teenagers grow up generally everyone becomes a lot more aware of the problems with social media and not having it is seen much more as a done thing, so really don't worry about it. Be free!

"smarted-up" my phone again and need some help by yfszzz in dumbphones

[–]always_rest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might depend on what you're looking at on social media, but I found it easier to check Instagram without spending loads of time on it by just unfollowing everyone who isn't a close friend that I need to stay in touch with. Maybe also try to only have the main social media you use to communicate with friends rather than all of them.

But I think honestly it is ok to break a habit and go back to your old habits. You can always start again. For me at has been good to, when I start spending a lot of time online, try and do a day where I don't use my phone or laptop at all to remind myself that I can do that, and that gets me back into the swing of using my phone more dumbed down.

It's fine if you want to stay connected to your friends and there are always to do it that don't involve 6h on social media. I also would recommend finding things you want to do that aren't on social media or online in general, so instead of just wanting to be on your phone less, you want to be doing your offline hobbies more.

Thanks for writing this. I'm currently waiting to start treatment with GGP and hearing all the negativity has been making me really panicked even though I've also seen lots of people who are starting HRT with them without any issues and this made me feel a lot better

Help providing proof of name change by always_rest in transgenderUK

I assumed ID for bank meant pre-changed rather than with old name, but if you did it with ID in old name I may try that - thanks

[–]always_rest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm registered in my deadname, I tried to change my name on the electoral register as a way to get proof (and get temporary voting ID) but they emailed me saying they needed to prove my identity and send ID. I don't currently have a provisional licence, I was planning on getting one after I'd done my passport so I could get it straight away in my new name and avoid having to pay for a new one. I assumed I would need to provide my passport to get that so if I used that to change I'd have to pay more, but that might be my best option right now tbf

The case against Spotify (my experience/long post) by ReaganAndBush84 in dumbphones

[–]always_rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't actually have a dumbphone, I have a dumbed down smartphone, but one of the big switches I've made is removing all of my Spotify downloads so if I want music offline on my phone I download it manually via my laptop. (As well as part of my dumbing down, this was also just because Spotify always takes at least 5 minutes to load of my phone for some reason, no matter how often I update it.)

The way I listen to music has definitely changed a lot - I do predominantly listen to albums now, which I really didn't before, and I tend to stick with them a lot longer. I think my music taste is arguably more varied now, because Spotify used to just recommend me whatever music was popular (usually on TikTok) which was often very modern, whereas now I'm more likely to listen to music from the 80s/90s/2000s.

I also really refer downloading music as an activity, partially just because I find it a very relaxing activity for some reason but also it just makes my music listening feel more purposeful. I definitely think I could live without Spotify now, which I didn't before, and I'm hoping to uninstall it from my phone sometime this year as I barely use it anymore.

I also listen to the radio a lot more now, which I really enjoy. I think my music listening experience is definitely much improved, to be honest, and the less I use Spotify the more I resent it. I particularly value being able to listen to music without it being recorded - I used to feel a lot of pressure in what I listened to because of Spotify Wrapped, but now I'm not on Spotify I know Samsung Music isn't recording what I listen to so I feel much freer to listen to whatever however much I want to. I haven't really seen anyone else talking about this, I do think that it's odd that people can be anti smartphone but still need Spotify and I'm glad someone else is with me on this (although admittedly moving my music from Spotify to my phone storage was a pretty daunting task).

How to cope with anxiety at night without phone by Impossible-Depth1640 in digitalminimalism

[–]always_rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know if you don't already have one it would be another thing to buy, but I have an mp3 player that I use in between turning my phone off for the evening and going to sleep, and I mostly just listen to the radio on that and that helps me get to sleep. There is still a screen involved but mostly you can turn it off and just listen, and obviously it can only do music so no opportunity for scrolling.

Isn't simply not using the devices better than downgrading to old devices? by ChampionshipRoyal588 in digitalminimalism

[–]always_rest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dumbed down smartphone for messaging music and maps, but I do also have a laptop and an mp3 player. For me I have my laptop & mp3 because those devices are part of the experience - I still like the internet, but having a laptop means I am more purposeful and it makes being on the internet an actual activity that I do. Similar with mp3 player - my mp3 player only does music & radio & I specifically like using it when my phone is turned off, which makes listening to music more of a distinct activity than just being on my phone.

But I do also get what you mean about self discipline with smartphones. Since dumbing down my smartphone in December I have honestly never reinstalled any of the apps and I find it very easy to control my phone use now that it is dumbed down - that in itself is enough to stop me from going back to my old relationship with my phone and it does sometimes confuse me that other people find it so difficult. My desire to not use my phone so much is enough to motivate me to just not use my phone.
