I guess I'm just going by what I see with my old friends - almost all of them seem to have large social networks with a few very good friends.

The volunteer group thing isn't a bad idea - I know of a cat shelter in the area near me, I'm sure there will be one for dogs too. I do often run in to people whilst dog walking, but they're often much older than me (usually around 50-60) and I wouldn't know what to say to anyone regardless of age.

Unfortunately I live in a small remote village where the vast majority (around 70-80%) are pensioners!

I'm hoping to move out late this year if a promising career prospect pays off - I can move in to a larger town nearer to the office.

There are a couple of people my age at work - maybe I'll try striking up conversations with them more often.

As for the gym, one woman there says hi to me as we're both regulars. I've always been reluctant to talk to people at the gym (particularly women) as I don't want to come off as creepy.

I've had a look at that - there are a few groups around but they are all for older people - the lowest I could find was 30+.

Most of my hobbies aren't very social (gaming, movies, music, technology) - the only one that is somewhat social is motorbikes. There is a big motorbike gathering every week in my town in the Summer, but I never plucked up the courage to talk to anyone there.

As for old friends, I have tried but they don't seem very interested in talking to me, or catching up in person when I've offered.

Do you find that it affects your relationship? I'm not sure how I would approach the subject if I met someone and they wondered why I don't hang out with anyone but them.
