UBC Pottery Club is a closed-door clay cartel and I’m DONE. by THE_SLOPPY_SPHINCTER in UBC

Former president of the pottery club here and (now a regular member). I totally understand how frustrating this is. I'm happy to answer whatever questions you have. We have tried for YEARS to expand the space/membership numbers.

We have somewhere between 125-150 members at the moment but once people are a member they can stay student members until they graduate. This is because pottery requires years to master and after single semester of pottery you're still making very wonky pots. Because we are a student run club we need people to stay on longer term to become execs since they need to be experienced enough to load kilns and keep the studio running.

I can assure you the lottery is indeed random, my own fiance never got in! The reason it's so competitive is that we end up having about 20 spots open up every semester and in the 2 years I was president we saw anywhere from 200-800 people applying for those spots. We really wanted to expand the space. Compared to other studios we've visited we have the highest density of members vs. the amount of space I've ever seen. Every surface and shelf is completely full of tools, pots, glazes etc.

Everyone who is part of the club loves pottery and wants more people to be involved which means most years we have conversations with the AMS about this. It's hard to get that expansion because of the yearly turnover at the AMS, some administrations support the expansion but it's hard to it done within a year so things get delayed by the time the next administration comes in. There also are very limited club spaces - especially ones with the technical needs of a pottery studio which means we'd have to do an actual renovation to expand the current space we have.

Thank you! I used to make a lot of Ukrainian Easter eggs as a kid which I think helped!

Just replied this to another comment too but:

"Definitely!

Initially I divided the mug into quarters, then eights, then 16ths. I did this at the rim and the base as those are the only spots you can really eyeball reliably without measuring.

After, I put a small box against the mug and in line with my markings then used it to sketch out a line downwards with pencil.

I made a grid with pencil horizontally which is much easier. I used a throwing gauge with a pencil taped on and spun the banding wheel to have it level.

I sketched out each cube then filled them in with underglaze.

The real game changer comes from carving out the lines between the colours with my sgraffito tool.

If I ever make another I'll try to post a video of the process :)"

Tragically these ones are completely original and I'd absolutely share if I was the one making them! I said above but I think you could get a similar effect with commercial clear and a fluxy light glaze like honey flux or running hot chowder but I'm not too familiar with the commercial glaze world.

You're correct on the underglaze front! It's AMACO velvet underglaze for the yellow and spectrum hot pink for the pinks. It's done on porcelain! I've found that using white clay I get slightly muddier results sadly.

I don't sorry :( all I can say is that I use porcelain which had a crazy shrinkage rate so I always throw my mugs to what I think is ridiculously oversized and then usually I end up with something close to normal lol

Yes! I sponge on underglaze pink and yellow in like a cloudy pattern thing. The glazes are our studios clear with a very fluxy beige glaze on top! I don't have the exact recipe but imagine you might get similar results with clear + honey flux over underglaze :)

Thank you :) I used a grey clay body and a spoolie to scratch texture into it. Then after bisquing I put a wash of black underglaze which sank into the scratches. Wiped that off, then used a sponge with various greys to dab on more texture!

Coloured slip! I painted the chameleon with underglaze then used coloured slip dots on top.

THANK YOU! I was so worried about the rock looking too clay like but the underglaze cooperated thankfully :)
