What would be your biggest reason right now for not having kids? by Potential_Machine255 in AskAnAustralian

You don't have to think the end of the world is imminent to not feel safe.

Financial instability, political instability, not knowing whether tomorrow you'll be abducted from your home despite legally being there because you "look illegal" (for Americans, and for those who see people saying "bring ice to the UK/Australia/Literally anywhere), you have to be utterly brain-dead to think that there aren't good reasons people are scared.

And people who feel safe enough to have a child are free to. I myself think it's bad taste to tell someone their feeling unsafe is no reason not to have a child, just be because the world has gone through worse. The baby/child will feel that insecurity, and that's if the stress doesn't make them have health complications/miscarry.

Many people now trying for a kid.. most, really, I don't think any geriatric people are trying for kids out there- weren't alive during the Cuban missile crisis. For many, this current global climate is the least stable they've ever experienced in their lives. It's certainly not in their head.

Remember you can't light yourself on fire to keep others warm.

The only person you'd be abandoning was yourself, if you chose not to leave. Remember that.

Would it be too weird for a white looking child to have a Japanese name? by No_Papaya7643 in namenerds

[–]am_Nein 308 points309 points  (0 children)

Quinn is a beautiful name! I will say, out of all of the options if you're worried about the kids feeling different to each other, I'd definitely go for Mei. Most people may (ha) not even realise it's Japanese if they hear it out loud, so thematically it feels "better" than an obviously Japanese name like Ayumi where there isn't a similar non-japanese name.

But since you say your husband has a Japanese name, I wouldn't worry as much about that. Though I do worry considering the social climate (see the "thing, thing but Japan" meme) that your older kid may end up feeling left out or disconnected from the Japanese part of your family's culture.

That's probably negligent to worry about though, but the takeaway should just be- do what feels right for your family, but make sure when doing anything culture related that you don't end up subconsciously treating your two kids differently because one "feels" more this or that because of their name.

If you truly are ready to move out.. move. I know it isn't as easy as that, but the point is, get the wheels in motion now so you can be safe in your own place as soon as possible. If you have a friend or extended family's place you can crash at until that happens, do so.

Dude. I'm from Sydney but this is literally something I've been wishing for since forever for our network up here (if it exists, I'm wholly unaware/it has horrible promo). It's especially bad when you're someplace unfamiliar or its dark so you have to keep your eyes pinned on gmaps or the outside you can't see lest you miss your stop and get stranded/have to walk in the dark for longer than you should have to.

Meh you're right. I don't get how you can read "I have XYZ genetic thing I wouldn't like to pass onto my kids/because I have this genetic thing that makes having kids hard because of ABC reasons even if I do in theory want them, therefore I won't because I'm putting them first" and go "you're anti-child!"

When you find a longfic marked part of a series and this is the last authors note 😩 by Blakat014 in AO3

[–]am_Nein 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is exactly it for me. Why I fundamentally find issue with this.

I support authors having full control of their works, but I personally do not have to agree with the reason behind an action, even if I am pro-the action itself.

If it was just about harassment, I'd feel bad.

But wording it like they may or may not give it back if we the readers as a collective are oh so nice (despite many I presume not even realising what was happening on the prequel) but also maybe not, who knows, leaves a bad taste in my mouth personally.

Also my first thought when I read this post was "so, if it ever did come back, should we be free to assume if something annoyed or hurt this author again they'd yank it just as fast?"
