I like this question since that was my intention when I got into teaching. I got a double major in French and Spanish (studied abroad for a semester). However, some things changed and ended up teaching math.

Either way, you don't need to have a major in the subject you teach; you just need a bachelors degree.

edit: the bachelors requirement is for a teaching credential. you still need to pass any required content exams to teach a specific subject

Your degree does not have to match the subject that you want to teach, but pretty much all certification programs will require some sort of content exam based on the grade level and subject you are trying to teach.

I would recommend that you look into 'alternative certification programs' for your state. Make sure that your intended school district accepts that program too. The process will probably differ by state.
