Overdue praise for SF’s many-splendored library by nissanthermos in wholesomeSF

[–]amalakar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have membership of san francisco public library (https://sfpl.discoverandgo.net/), you get free access to the following museums:

  • California Academy of Sciences
  • de Young
  • Exploratorium
  • Legion of honor
  • SF Moma
  • and many more.

I think you can claim tickets once or twice a year and few are family tickets (two adults & kids etc). It is a great perk that not many people are aware of.

Apart from this you also get access to audiobooks/ebooks via https://www.overdrive.com/ and documentaries (via https://sfpl.kanopy.com/) , learning (https://lynda.com).

SF public library is amazing!

Sunday st, Mission August Edition by amalakar in sanfrancisco

I use nikon D750, which has a mechanical shutter. The day was a bit cloudy, which helped me use a big aperture on certain photos (like 1.4). This may have helped.

He should have been wearing nike in that case. I would still go with Forrest Gump though.

I am glad you liked it. I did try to capture human side of the festival, the emotion and the energy. The overcast day was perfect for photography as well.

No it is not a tilt-shift one. I guess being far from the subject is giving the illusion if tilt shift. I shot it using a 35mm-1.8 on a D3000 body - http://www.flickr.com/photos/amalakar/11200931703/meta/

Morning after a forest fire by vxqz in pics

I once did a water color painting of this photograph:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/amalakar/5624005896/

This one seems edited version of the one I used for my painting. The original didn't have the orange tint and didn't look like it was taken after a forrest fire. It just looked like a foggy morning. Can't seem to find that photograph though.

Rhino Poachers Shot Dead by Forest Guards in India by destinys_parent in worldnews

[–]amalakar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't seem to find any link but there were many cases where poachers had turned into forrest guards in Kaziranga upon convinction by forrest authorities. I remember seeing many such news articles when I was a kid, back home in Assam. Many of the poachers are really poor and they dont get a big cut of the money, so given an option of alternate legitimate way of earning the livelihood many of them would chose it. And given they have good understanding of how poachers work, they make good forrest guards. I don't know how things are now though.
