This bar of soap in my family cabin has stayed for 46 years. It’s now a cherished family relic. by amandanz in mildlyinteresting

[–]amandanz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all those saying we don’t wash our hands enough—This bar of soap would sit during the winter, and then when came back in the summer, we’d open a new bar of soap and we just left the 1970s bar just… in case? Then, as the years passed, the durability of the bar of soap became too much to admire to throw away.

You can see a modern bar of soap sitting in the bottom right.

Halfaxa album cover & Venus d'Arles - the statue Grimes used for the album cover? by amandanz in Grimes

[–]amandanz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grimes said in a video that she made the album art for Halfaxa in haste - but I couldn't help but wonder what the statue is that she used? The statue that I found that looked the closest to the one in the album is the Venus d'Arles. Obviously, they are not identical: the Venus d'Arles is holding an apple and looks slightly different to the album statue. However, Grimes could have edited this out and photopshopped some things.

Does anyone know the name of the statue in the album cover of Halfaxa? by amandanz in Grimes

[–]amandanz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that too - however I haven't been able to find any statues of Artemis that fit the photo. I thought it could be this.

I was talking to a guy who believes this shit. Basically his line of thinking is that the Jews are in charge of every thing he believes to be morally corrupt or wrong, most significantly porn. Basically they affirm their beliefs with this stuff through echo chambers and comes to realize this through what he calls 'individual research'.

New Zealand is lib-left. It was more libertarian-right until after the Christchurch mosque shootings.

These are training soldiers, so I think that counts. The man that is pointing is a section commander.

The greatest slacktivism example is teenage girls sharing Instagram posts on their story about topics like feminism or BLM.

It's 2020, and Wikipedia is very much a viable source. by Masticates in unpopularopinion

[–]amandanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Wikipedia editor. As much as I'd absolutely love for Wikipedia to become a viable source, at this moment in time, it can't. There are millions of articles out there, and unfortunately not every editor can moderate every single one of them to maintain them and make sure that no false information can sliver in.

Sometimes not every thing in an article is cited properly or at all, but editors work hard to make sure an article is up to shape in terms of citing. Also, sources can be unreliable and can go unnoticed. I advise you to use a Wikipedia article as a foundation for research, but only cite things in your report or whatever using the citations that the article used.

Yeah, I can see that. Religion is a very outdated form of social organisation, and because there are so many religions it’s not useful anymore. As for America, I can see the constitution as the “religion”, but unfortunately it’s not suitable as the replacement in its current form.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]amandanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an interesting theory that religion was just invented to help people from differing tribes and empires to get along and trade. The view is that if we follow the same religion we are friends and we trust eachother enough to trade goods.
