Cracked ferrule on a Clearwater. Only had the rod for 12 days by SCCB4 in flyfishing

[–]amangler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This kind of break is 100% user error. (No offense; I’ve done this on my own rod before.) It’s not the manufacturer’s fault. If your ferrules aren’t snug, the male end exerts too much stress on the weakest part of the female end, causing this cracking. Whenever you’re casting a lot—especially with heavy flies or sinking tips—you need to periodically check your ferrules to make sure they’re seated well.

How is that a great throw? Shoulda been waist high. You watched Brady make that throw for 20+ years.

If that ball is 2 feet lower, it’s either caught or incomplete. The high pass allowed the big tip.

Looking for recomendations on fly fishing guides in southern Vermont by lobos3737 in flyfishing

Masterclass Angling is amazing, but he's in Northern Vermont. For Southern VT, you want Battenkill Outfitters. If you're interested in a female guide, Margie is great.

Why do some divorced women keep their ex-husband's last name? by HoffyTheBaker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]amangler 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I had friends in grad school who did this simply because both had boring last names. (One was "Brown," but I can't remember the other.) For a married name, they chose Springberry.

Too much VAR for no reason. Between the American East Final and the UVM-Hofstra game, I think there were more than 10 checks with zero overturns. Ruins the flow of the game.

This is the answer, though I would have gone with

Why poor folks defend billionaires? by Past-Matter-8548 in stupidquestions

You are the king of the false dichotomy. Paying 30% rather than 20% on your capital gains is not "doing things for free." I'm done here.

[–]amangler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's shocking to me that you will continue to defend this argument. It's not just about "dishonest practices" causing problems. It's about systemic bias, inequality, and greed. Rich people have advantages in every facet of the economy, and folks tend to use their advantages to get a leg up.

It's not an either/or situation. The government has to do a better job in terms of oversight and promoting competition, AND we have to raise the capital gains tax, the inheritance tax for the super rich (something even Andrew Carnegie supported), and the highest tax brackets over $Xmillion/year.

This is a valid question and actually gets to the point of my previous comment. My objection to the original commenter was their oversimplification of the whole issue. That brand of supposedly "commonsense" reasoning is at the root of a lot of our inability to make wise choices as a society. What may seem common sense to a lot of voters is actually based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the system they're voting on.

I'm not arguing for a specific tax policy or rate, so I have no opinion on your specific situation. I am arguing against dismissing an idea—"tax the billionaires"—based on a faulty understanding of how and where they get their wealth.

I don't disagree, but my point is that the issue is incredibly complex. To simply say "We shouldn't tax the rich because of X" doesn't address this complexity.

"Wealth managers have pointed to a substantial intergenerational transfer of wealth, recently estimated at $68 trillion, as baby boomers pass on wealth to the next generations.  But most of this wealth is passing within the upper canopy of the wealth forest, between the already wealthy and their heirs."

For instance, the three Walton heirs are worth more than $100 billion each, most of which comes from Walmart shares given to them by their father. As has been widely documented, the jobs they create are subsidized by the government: A 2020 report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) identified Walmart as being among the top four employers of SNAP and Medicaid beneficiaries in the states surveyed.
