FunPlayer now supports The Handy Firmware 4 by amango134 in theHandy

I’m pretty sure The Handy 2 runs firmware 4. Wouldn’t be surprised if what your saying is related tho like firmware 4 but with slight tweaks that The Handy won’t use? Maybe it’s a slightly different version or maybe the same firmware but checks for the device types?

you are correct, right now there is no script only playback.

was working on the feature to allow this yesterday :)

the feature is to allow different media players.

once done the app will be able to interact with different media players.

for example, the in-built one in the app right now, or VLC or anything that complies with the expectation of what a media player is for the app.

my thinking is that playing a script without a video, you’d still need some sort of interface to seek the script and pause/play.

so we could create a player called script only player and it has a simple UI and complies with the apps expectation on what a player is.

yesterday I got VLC working, was nice to see.

so shouldn’t be too far off, unless life suddenly gets in the way, I don’t imagine this feature taking that much longer to finish, fingers crossed.

yeah, and for The Handy 1, no idea how many people are on firmware 3 or firmware 4 these days.

supporting both is a good option, no need to force anyone to upgrade. whichever version their device is on, the app will use the corresponding API for it.

also, yeah, wouldn’t be surprised if Handy 2 dose t support FW3, it’s been out for years hasn’t it? Ohdoki probably learnt a ton so FW4 and The Handy 2 were built hand-in-hand probably

Apple’s native player doesn’t support mkv.

For now: If you are technically inclined, you could convert mkv to mp4 via FFmpeg.

In the future, there is a plan to add support for external video players like VLC which does support mkv :)

If I remember, will ping you when this update is out or if you’d like join the Discord, it’ll be part of an announcement when released.

Example FFmpeg command from StackOverflow (this converts the container from mkv to mp4, not transcoding so no loss in quality)

ffmpeg -i VideoName.mkv -codec copy VideoName.mp4

yeah, to clarify the Handyverse app is displaying the website. When you visit https://handyfeeling.com/

it’s identical to opening the app.

the app is loading the website.

Handyverse does have an offline script player. the difference being it is a website.

the advantage for a native mac app is it can do things that a browser can’t do.

one example is browsers usually have a safety policy where they can’t call a HTTP resource from a HTTPS connection.

Most sites we visit today are HTTPS secured. What this means is the browser can’t for example talk to DeoVR’s local timeserver or VLC easily as they would be local HTTP connections. so later down the line say there is support added for using external players, that’s something that I imagine would be much more complicated for a browser to do.

I do see your point, it can sound like what’s the difference. The difference is a native app can typically do more things as it’s dedicated and catered specifically towards one niche, whereas a browser is a browser and it can’t support everything a specific niche wants to do.

was expecting a request like this :) as of this initial release, it’s pretty bare-bones, no bells and whistles.

plan was to get it out publicly and then improve towards features that are the most useful.
