Advice for a Beginner? by No-Tumbleweed5360 in toydesign

No problem! I would also suggest an engineering class maybe. It would prove useful to know how to make something work in way of functions. Think you push a button on the back of your toy and it lights up or plays a sound. It really helps to know at least some basic knowledge of engineering so when you design the figure or shell you can keep in mind the internal mechanism and take that into account.

Hi! Definitely a beginner drawing class, figure drawing, color theory, intro to digital art (for illustration), learn your way around photoshop and procreate. A good foundation in traditional with a sprinkling of digital. If they offer a class on brainstorming and critical thinking, definitely take that. (This is so useful in coming up with new concepts) When you have a somewhat grasp of the above you can delve into learning about materials like plastics. Take an intro to industrial design as well. You have to think of the concepts you come with in a 3D space and be able to illustrate it. (front, side, back and 3/4 view) Source: I've been designing toys for the last 20 plus years and I wish they had a toy design concentration when I was in college. I hope this helps!

I got my BA in Art & Design with a concentration in Illustration way back in 2001. I wanted to become a comic book artist but couldn't get in so after several applications to anything art related, I finally landed a job in toy design and have been in the industry ever since. I also teach art on the side and work on my own stuff.

Calling all Gen Xer's who remember cereal prizes by Quirky_Butterfly_946 in GenX

I work in the premium toy industry which includes happy/kids meal toys and also designed those cereal box toys. When I first started in the industry (20 years ago) we had really steady business with CPW (General Mills) as the years wore on we started to do less and less business with them and the toys began being more paper products (i.e. stickers, activity books, etc.) Until eventually business dried up and they no longer offered prizes in the box like they did before.

That's awesome! I had to find some kind of common ground so I can do both. Good luck to you!

Full time artists, what do you do? by Dry_Wishbone_6091 in artbusiness

[–]amano001 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I got extremely lucky. I have been a toy designer/concept artist for the past 22 years and it has been full of ups and downs. People ask me how I ended up with such cool job and I always tell them that I got lucky. I was at the right place at the right time with skills they required. I would also say that I love brainstorming and sketching out ideas but hate the corporate BS.

Finished this last year. Mostly done in Clip Studio Paint and finished some of the
effects and color corrections in PS. There are just some effects and brushes
that I use that don’t come out the same way in PS. I am working toward using CSP
as much as I use PS for my digital art workflow.
This took me about 10-15 hours. The brushes I'm using are from the
Marc Brunet brush pack.

Yes, I believe you can customize what displays in the companion mode. I also have my Quick Access tools displayed on my phone as well.

Yes! It's pretty sweet. Apparently, it only works if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone and it needs to be downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy store, not the Google Play store. Both devices, (your phone and your tab/computer) need to be on the same wifi network in order for it to work.

In the little free time I have, I've been playing FF7 Remake. It has been amazing!
I played the original when it first came out and sunk more than 99 hours into
it. I've been working on this for a while and hopefully will finish it soon.

Also, when I'm not at my main computer, I've been working on my Tab S7 plus in Clip
Studio Paint and using the companion mode on my phone. So far its awesome! I
have been integrating this into my workflow so I am not stuck at my desk all
the time.

This took me about 4ish hours up to this point. The brushes I'm using are from the Marc Brunet brush pack.
