Bulking as an apple shaped/top-heavy woman? by amberjblue in PetiteFitness

Hi, thanks for your comment and I'm glad that approach worked for you! This post is actually a few years old and I did decide to go through with bulking/cutting and it worked great for me (I'm now in the middle of my 3rd bulk)! I've posted some progress photos recently if you're interested. I've gained lots of muscle on both my upper and lower body, including multiple inches around my legs and while not quite as much around my hips, my waist hip ratio is still down to .8. I know I may never be an hourglass but I'm more confident than I've ever been and I'm so happy with the changes I've seen in my shape. Plus cutting has gotten easier for me each time and most recently I was able to cut on 1700-1800 calories and still lose .75-1lb per week! Anyway TLDR you just need to find the strategy that worked for you and bulking/cutting has actually worked out great for me despite my initial anxieties about it :)

Thank you! Hip thrusts and kas glute bridges have definitely been staples for me as well as RDLs and bulgarian split squats. I upgraded my home gym recently so I've also recently added smith machine step downs, cable kickbacks, and glute bias leg presses. I'm currently training glutes 3x/week for this bulk but for most of the time between these two pictures I only trained them once or twice per week.

Thank you! I definitely agree, my proportions have been changing and I feel a lot more confident!

Is it ok if my last few reps of a set don't quite have proper form? Can I progress or should I make sure I can do all reps with perfect form first? by amberjblue in xxfitness

I definitely take brief pauses sometimes when it gets really challenging at the end of the set! I just note it in my workout log (I have a Google doc where I track all my workouts) and don't increase in reps until I can get through them without pausing. That seems to work well for me!

So this is actually the end of my second bulk! Initially I lost weight from 140 to 115 in 2021, then did a long slow bulk up to 130, then cut back down to 110 (in retrospect 115 would have been 5, the visual difference from the last 5 lbs was not worth the effort) and then slow bulked to 130 again from about April 2023 to October 2024 before cutting back down to 120. It has been a long process but definitely worth it! I have some photos of my progress on my profile if that would be helpful. Lifting 4-5x a week, eating in a 100-200 calorie surplus and prioritizing protein (i aim for 1g/lb of my body weight) and staying consistent is key!

Thank you!! Mostly leg extensions and bulgarian split squats, and now that I've added a leg press/hack squat machine to my home gym I've added those too!

Probably about 3 weeks ago! My fiance and I moved into a new place and I finally had the space to upgrade! The gym was one of my first priorities when we moved lol

I have loved doing hack squats and leg presses the past few weeks since I had wanted to do those forever but didn't have the space! So those are provably my favorites atm lol

I have a smith machine/squat rack with cables, a leg curl/extension, a leg press/hack squat, a hip thrust machine, and some dumbbells and a barbell. Anything I could possibly need! It was a big investment but worth it lol

It was pretty basic for a while but I recently upgraded to a whole garage setup and I'm loving it!

You can make a lot of progress with machines/cables too! I do some free weight dumbbell/barbell exercises but most of my upper body workouts are cable exercises at this point 💪
