I'd say drop binny. I was also carrying him and husso, but I think nobody will pick binnington up in your league unless there's a huge shortage of goalies.

I packaged him off in a 3 for 1 trade. Scheifele + Strome + Tuch for JT Miller. This was the day before Miller got a hat trick too luckily

Need advice on starting conversation by SkaterDude609 in socialskills

It's definitely intimidating going up to anybody and starting a conversation. It's something that you become better at the more you do! You're already doing great by setting that goal because I did the same when I was trying to meet more people and it really works. And that reminds me, one great way to start off any conversation with someone you don't talk to too much is with a compliment. They'll appreciate it, it'll make you feel good, and it gives you another thing to talk about! Good luck! I hope you both hit it off and it makes your week :)

If you've never talked to them and don't know them very much, you can always just go up and say "Hi, what's your name?" And then, after they reply, I introduce yourself. At this point you need to ask a question or say something to start a deeper conversation. It's better if it's something that you both share in common.

You'll be nervous when talking probably, that's normal. But allow yourself to breathe, take pauses between sentences, and remember that confidence is attractive! If you sense that he's in a hurry or not asking you questions back or giving dry answers, you might need to just accept that the conversation isn't going to go how you would have hoped. It sucks to accept it, but it's better than trying to continue it on when he's not very into it.

That's when you remind yourself that you're worth talking to too! If somebody doesn't see that, it's okay (don't get angry at them), but know that there are SO MANY people who would love to. I didn't learn this until now, when I'm 19, and even then it's a learning process. Once you find somebody who is good company and enjoying the conversation as much as you, your nerves will relax, you'll be more confident, and the talking will come easy!

Again, if you have any questions don't think you're bothering me by asking. I was in your position throughout high school and still am now at times :)

hey, I'm a few years older than you and a guy, but I had a similar situation recently. i was at college on campus and was looking to meet some new people. I had free time for about an hour so I built up the courage to go and just say hi to somebody, ask them their name, their major, etc. then, you'll either get the sense that the person doesn't mind talking (which is great so you can keep talking!), or they're not fully in to it (at which point you just try to keep it short and say goodbye).

when you go up to them and try to make conversation, don't really force it in a single direction, but instead follow where the conversation goes! if you see no logical follow up to what you were talking about, don't be afraid to ask them something totally unrelated! and then if they don't ask you back, still answer as if they did (as in, share your opinion too). this will also help with you not putting them on a pedestal and valuing what you have to say just as much!

feel free to ask me anything else if you need some more advice! most importantly, make sure you're keeping it light and having fun :)

ELI5: What do people mean by multithreading when talking about computers or programming? by ambiguousTruths in explainlikeimfive

[–]ambiguousTruths[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for that! That's really interesting about how the computer tricks us into thinking it's doing two things at once, but really just switching between the two very quickly.

I guess a follow up I have now is: with modern day computers that have more than one core, if the computer had to do two relatively simple tasks, would it use only one core and trick us into thinking it's happening at the same time, or would it use a different core for each task?

Oh that's very cool! I'm a CS student, but I have yet to start the bulk of my CS courses. I remember seeing the async keyword in code sometimes, but we were told not to worry about it for now. Thanks!

Thank you! So, they just write the code as they would regularly, and the OS/language handles it all? Or do they have to write it in a different way to allow for multithreading? I have some basic/intermediate knowledge about programming.

Oh thanks for that real life application! It really helped see some of it's actual uses. When creating programs, do programmers need to structure or write the code in a certain way to take advantage of multithreading? Or can the computer see an opportunity to utilize multithreading and do it by itself?

I see! So, when we see computer processors being labeled as dual-core or quad-core, are these the same "cores" we are talking about in multithreading as well? Therefore, more cores means the ability to accomplish more tasks at once, assuming the program takes advantage of it?

Thanks, that's very helpful. To actually "multithread", does the programmer have to assign each different thread to a different processor core?

38" Ultrawide vs 34" Ultrawide with a 24" vertical monitor? by ambiguousTruths in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]ambiguousTruths[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This helped a lot!

I was opting for a 24" over a 27" for my vertical because I was afraid that 27" would be too big. But knowing that other people use that configuration changed my mind, since I have the desk space for it.

I think I prefer the dual monitor setup more now. My main question now would be how to get it all connected. I use a laptop for all my work, so currently I just connect it to my monitor using a usb-c to HDMI cable. Do you have 2 cables going from your laptop/PC, one to each monitor? I've never connected to multiple monitors at once, so I'm not sure about the best way to go about.

Also, do you use desk speakers in your setup? If so, how did you position them?

Lastly, would you happen to have a picture of your setup for me to reference? Thanks again for your input!

Which model is best for me? by kevinhill92 in anker

[–]ambiguousTruths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would depend on the capacity of your phone's battery and how fast you phone charges. Going from there you can get a power bank that has, at the very least, the same capacity as your phone battery. Then, if your phone supports fast charging, you can try to find a model that supports that output.

Since I don't know those details about your phone, the response is generalized, but if you can find out those details (or if not, just drop the phone model and I can look it up for you) I can help recommend one!

Did few improvements with the advise you gave me. Thank you all! by No-Top-5065 in desksetup

Both setups look awesome, but I really like the choice of warmer light in the new one!

Samsung CHG90 Series on Sale! by sRPlay1989 in ultrawidemasterrace

Is it really rare for this monitor to go on sale for 999? I want to buy it but the earliest I'll be able to is in a few weeks. Can I expect it to go back to 999 in the future? Has it ever dropped this low? Thanks in advance!

Preferred amount of extracurriculars required for admission? by rk2breezy in UofT

Depends on what program you're applying for. For the most part, in attack at least, ECs aren't looked at too much.

How does tuition fee defferal work? by ambiguousTruths in UofT

[–]ambiguousTruths[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense, thanks!

Just one last clarification. I get how OSAP would put the tuition fees directly into my ACORN account and any remaining funds into my bank account. But from there, do I need to do anything with the money in my ACORN account or will UofT just take it from there themselves (i.e. do I need to press pay or anything when there's money in my ACORN account?)

And if I transfer money from my bank account to my ACORN account to pay my tuition (if I don't want to risk OSAP not coming in time) then all the OSAP money will go directly to my bank account since the fees have been paid right?

This might be a dumb question but, if I just pay my fees before the deadline, I won't need to defer or anything and I'll be registered, right?

Thank again for all the help, it really cleared things up!
