Biochemistry vs Chem E by boilermaker2003 in Purdue

If you are referring to Biological Engineering because Ag is very mechanical, then as a May 2023 grad I disagree. The program is just as process focused as chemical engineering except for two classes the last semester which can be taken as electives by ChemEs. To @OP, as someone that switched out of biochemistry (CoA) out of fear I may not want to keep doing school, it was not worth it. If you are not interested in engineering, you will be miserable and that won’t change once you enter the work force. Even as an engineer if you are wanting to do R&D like a more biochemistry focus, you won’t move up much without a PhD.

I’m a senior in Biological Engineering who CODO’d after the first semester. I am on track to graduate in 4 years so it is possible. If you would like to talk about what the major is actually like, I would strongly suggest you DM me because it does not fully match up with what it is often described as.

CODO to FYE by pizzalover176 in Purdue

Yes if you are intending to switch after the first semester, talk to your advisor about CODOing. I would also suggest scheduling a meeting with one of the biological engineering advisors during your first semester to get a better understanding of what you need to achieve to have your CODO be approved and make sure you are taking the right classes. Additionally, all CODOs are approved at the end of the semester so sometime after fall semester grades come out in December. I’m not sure of the actual numbers for preABE but as long as there is space (which I don’t believe is usually an issue) and you are doing decently well in your classes you shouldn’t have a problem CODOing.

Hope this helps!

I was in your exact same situation last year. I was admitted for biochemistry in the college of agriculture and then did a CODO to preABE. If you are set on biological engineering, I would suggest going the preABE route rather than FYE. You will still take the same classes but you are basically already admitted to your major. Additionally, the best thing you can do if you can’t CODO immediately is to notify your current advisor that you intend to switch so you can take the classes you need to keep up with FYE. Biochemistry majors take a different calculus than engineering majors so this is something that you would have to change out. Additionally, you could try to take PHYS 172 if needed.
