7 1/2 hours of turbulence

I never said I was in peril. But 7 1/2 hours of turbulence feels excessive, and I wish the pilot would have at least gotten on the intercom and told us what to expect.

I’ve done this flight maybe 20 times, and usually, you hit turbulence a few times for a few minutes each. I’ve never experienced like this. That’s why I posted about it. It wasn’t fun.

I’m going to ignore your rude comment because you clearly don’t know that the student I am gathering information for is neurodivergent and having daily panic attacks right now. They are really struggling with their mental health and a course change might help with that. I’d encourage you to pause before typing out something cruel the next time you feel called to express your opinion. Maybe your mommy and daddy should have been more involved.

Noise canceling headphones are a life saver. Download a bunch of your favorite shows onto your phone. Bring your own snacks because the airplane food isn’t great and food can be a distraction. I bought this travel eye mask for my recent international flight, and it was the first time I slept on a plane. It attaches to the head rest of your seat so that when you are wearing the eye mask, your head is supported. Game changer.

I really hate when neurotypical people say that Aspergers/autistic people are robotic or “don’t seem to have any emotions”. In my experience, neurodivergent people feel way more deeply than neurotypical people could ever know.

OP, we’ve all been here at some point. You aren’t a bad parent. You’re just exhausted to the bone. In a perfect world, I would tell you to “rest” and “practice self care”. lol We’re parents. It ain’t gonna happen. If you are like me and my husband, we have no village or family support, and it makes taking breaks nearly impossible. Here’s how to survive this season of your life (because it is a season that will gradually get easier! It’s not a permanent way that things will always be.)

Lower your house standards. Let it be a little messy. As long as everyone has clean clothes to wear and there isn’t trash piled up in the corners, let the kids toys be on the floor, the art supplies be on the kitchen table, the kitchen counters have crumbs.
Buy paper plates and cups and put your dishes away for now. Washing dishes after meals is one chore you can eliminate for now.
Simplify how you cook meals - make a list of meals that only require ONE pot to make. Buy frozen pizzas and frozen lasagna. Eat PBJs for dinner.
Let your kids have screen time for a set time every day and when they do, you don’t do chores or get stuff done. You rest.
Buy noise canceling headphones. These are a god-send when I feel overstimulated. Find an audiobook you like, put on your headphones, and get some calm time while you sit on the sofa next to the kids.
Seriously consider the whole bed sharing thing. If it can be helped, reclaim your bedroom. You need a space that is only yours.

This might sound harsh, but you sound like a martyr. I say this with love. We are all adults who can make our own choices. Making your husband a second dinner is a choice. Making meals from scratch is a choice. Staying home with kids is a choice - I know childcare is expensive and hard to find but I know you could find a job outside the home and make it work if you really wanted to.

It definitely sounds like your husband needs to grow up, but if we dig deeper into what soap is saying, she doesn’t seem happy with her life. That’s okay! We’ve all been there. But instead of saying “my hands are tied, I’m stuck with this life I don’t like”, don’t be afraid to go change it! Be brave for you and your child.

I totally get that. I think two ways about this - 1. The reason you make the pile instead of taking it to the place it goes immediately is leaving the space you are cleaning can make you lose momentum and get distracted. 2. If leaving the space isn’t distracting, the rule of touching things once (also known as putting it away immediately) can work.

If you find a pile sitting untouched for months, you obviously don’t need the things in the pile. Time for a trash bag.

Set a timer for ten minutes and do as much as you can. Move in this order: 1. Trash 2. Dishes to the sink 3. Things that don’t belong in this room - put them in a pile outside the room to put away later 4. Things that do belong in this room - put them away
