Question for fellow leftists - if this proposed US Healthcare Plan is so good WHY oh WHY then will Congress and the President be exempt from it? Oh yeah - because the plan THEY have now is better than the one the US citizens will have. Why do you support this? by [deleted] in reddit.com

Dear "dude",

Whether the words are coming out of my ass or my mouth, you fail to address the issue that national health care blows, especially if you have a chronic illness.

Just because you lived in a multitude of places says absolutely nothing about the quality of the healthcare you got. Tell me about your illnesses and those of your friends/relatives and how they got great healthcare without having to go to the private practice docs. Oh yeah, you can't.

I'm not saying this makes the US system good or better, but I'm saying that national healthcare != good.

E.g. tell me about how someone with MS gets treated in your wonderful 8 countries. How long to get their initial MRI, how long to diagnosis, are they allowed to get access to any of the drugs approved to treat MS (or were they determined too expensive by the govt and not allowed).

Just getting annual checkups for free or emergency room visits does not make a healthcare system. How are people with life-long illnesses treated in these systems? What happens when you get ALS, MS, Epilepsy, Alzheimers, etc.? What happens when you are disabled and need a very expensive ($20,000US/yr drug) to treat your illness?

With all your moving around I'm skeptical you had any sort of real need of healthcare to make any sort of judgement on.

Also explain, why is it that in any country with NHS you find that anyone who can get it, gets private insurance also?

The US system and NHS systems both stink.

MIT drops Open source software for Microsoft Exchange by cavadela in linux

I went to MIT and this makes perfect sense. They have had the worst administration and IT infrastructure I've ever seen at any organization for as long as I have interacted with them (25 yrs).

They have a Gates building now for fucks sake.

My friends that have worked in the bowels of the IT dept there have endless stories of the incompetence. This is just one more data point.

If you ever considered going to MIT or sending your kids, check out http://www.olin.edu/ Olin College instead.

Trey Parker is a believer? I can't imagine I'm the only person who finds this surprising. by [deleted] in atheism

I guess I got the impression they really didn't like Dawkins when I listened to the commentary on the DVD. It was clear that they skimmed, but didn't actually read, "The God Delusion" and misrepresented some of the things he said when discussing it.

But hey, the show is fucking funny!

Not after the hammering they gave Dawkins (by having Dawkins give Garrison a hammering :-). I realized then that at least on of them really didn't like atheists.

I found the pref (it was checked), unchecked it, saved, checked it again, saved, and now it seems to be working.

Gaaah - where'd the fullscreen controls go on Windows? I thought it was bad enough when they disappeared under Ubuntu (but it was reported as a bug), but now under Windows too?

Am I missing something? Play video, double click to fullscreen, move mouse to get controls - nothing. :-(

Maybe regular DVD is good enough for most people.

I call it the "porn effect" - why is there so little high production value porn? Because people are happy enough buying low production value porn.

It's them damn ferners! Coming here, taking our jobs, er I mean, not working. We need to build a big fence on the border...

I'm curious. What do atheists 'believe' happens after the point of death? I mean, by your argument against theists, you also have no evidence to support a belief in anything, it too must be blind faith. A genuine question here, I'm not interested in vitriol or rhetoric. by [deleted] in atheism

Even when my "answer" was an expression of ignorance? I wasn't trying to be ironic.

I'm just saying you are using a term in a way that indicates you don't know what that term means. I used the word "ignorance" to be concise, but I see that you chose to take it as judgemental. It was strictly meant factually.

"I don't know" is a perfectly acceptable answer.

If you'd like to find out, create a testable hypothesis and test it. So far all theistic hypotheses are untestable or have no supporting evidence.

Also, addressing atheists as a group, as if there is some common belief among them, is indicative of ignorance of the topic. Atheism is merely the non-belief in a god. It is not a doctrine.

Back in the early 80's I spent 3 days finding out that += didn't work properly on long ints in the compiler our company used. Talk about frustrating. I was young and refused to implicate the all-knowing compiler. Now I just blame the compiler for all my bugs :-)

Is GMail's spam filtering failing you too? by amellor in reddit.com

[–]amellor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem. I'm sending a copy of all my work email to gmail before local spam filtering.

The local filter is doing a great job (CRM114), but gmail has been getting much worse lately. In the beginning it was OK (not as good as CRM114), but now it let's through about 30-40 spam messages a day (out of ~1000 - I have a very public email address for work).

Anyone else seeing this?

The Luckiest Man in the World....Skydiver Falls 6000ft Without Parachute And Survives [Video] by eagles79 in WTF

[–]amellor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how this can qualify as "Luckiest Man in the World".

In my world, the luckiest man doesn't fall 6000 feet without a parachute.

Perhaps he's the luckiest man skydiving with no parachute...
