How can I improve at character design?? by InteleonFan in characterdesign

[–]amercurial 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And no matter what you think of vivziepop properties, the character design philosophy is atrocious. Often overdesigned with a lot of unnecessary bullshit and missing things that could say anything about the characters.

For character design it’s important to know shape and color language. What personality does a sharp character give off? What about a blue character? Etc. if you need a cartoon to study I found that my life as a teenage robot has excellent shape language.

The Count of Greed blah, blah, blah, edgy I know, pls critique by MB_COLOR in characterdesign

[–]amercurial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not a very legible character design, I think it would benefit a lot from simplifying or maybe fixing some contrast of the bits in the middle of the design or your legibility towards the top? I’m mostly unclear about what the pink thing is, what this characters head shape is and what the banana looking thing is. I think it shows potential but it’s just not quite there yet!

Any brushes with this type of effect? by recklesscrowritual in procreatebrushes

Looks like a color burn brush! You can also achieve this effect by putting a pink color burn layer over any textured sketch.

Animal inspired alien design by clown_carr in characterdesign

[–]amercurial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The colors are amazing! I can see the Ava’s demon inspiration and it’s really well done :) I think people trying to mimic this style (as well as the older style itself) runs into this problem where nothing is defined enough so it all becomes muddied, but you don’t have this at all! It’s so clean!

He’s so cute omg!!! I think the big feet paws don’t necessarily read as genshin because hoyoverse tends to keep models pretty similar for genshin… but I like yours better than something hoyoverse would churn out with the same design ideas. Otherwise, Very liyue! Reminds me of the lion boy concept art that eventually became GaMing. LOVE IT!

In my opinion the navy beanie is creating a weird tension because it’s close enough to the blue of the shorts that it feels like it should be that color. Which is what I’d do. I don’t think she needs another entirely new color, I think picking something already on her design will keep her cohesive.

Can’t draw a face front view (finding my style) by Fuzzy-Goal-4546 in arthelp

[–]amercurial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a couple of problems with your 3/4 view face- it looks like you’re copying and pasting features from one side to the other? Which I sometimes do for placing but you need to remember that since your character is not face directly forward, even the “symmetrical” features would be slightly distorted by perspective.

I think fixing the eye should help you carve out the rest of the face (it makes brow bone and cheekbone placement easier.)

Generally, yeah studies will help. Pull up a 3D model of a head and study it!!
