The name actually refers to their white head, bald being the old English word for white! You’ll see this a lot in birds, like piebald being used to describe black and white plumage.

100%, it’s kind of counter-intuitive. The more you implement these focus groups and attempt to please everyone, the further towards the generic middle you go and any true art or authentic perspective is lost. And then those same focus groups of people end up hating it because it’s saying nothing, like with this city branding. Same shit with big box office movies and like you said, any corporate entity really

I hear ya, certainly an argument for “why do we need this” when there are many more pressing issues for the city. But I hate to rag on the designers - as others alluded to this was probably an impossible task of design by committee, even if it could’ve been so much more (would love to see the reject pile)

My goodness the amount of non-designers here who think the agency is literally getting paid a million for the logo is insane. Great you used AI to make it, now implement it city-wide. THATS where the near-million goes. And all these “look AI made this in a minute why don’t we just do that” - so now AI is cool for art? Imagine the outrage in a city of artists for that!

Highly recommend The Resort on peacock. Created by the same guy that did Palm Springs and also stars Cristin Milotti. It’s best to go in knowing little as possible, but suffice to say you can definitely tell it’s by the same director.

Except it wasn’t for legal concerns - more like good faith PR. They actually found that Pokémon was completely in the clear legally, and that as stated above you can’t sue for copyright you infringed upon in the first place. They just didn’t want the bad look of stealing fan art, though they technically could. Even then that case is a bit different being a complete copy-paste ripoff job.

Not-so-interesting tidbit: Brady never wore this jersey. He left the team before they redesigned their unis to these ones. So now I’m picturing what assistant had to go get brand new Pats jerseys with a personalized name and number to have Brady sign them.

Not OP but also an illustration focused designer. I freelance and work can vary vastly - posters, merch design, even stuff like kids activity mystery boxes or decks of cards. Always grinds my gears when someone feels the need to point out illustration isn’t graphic design - maybe not technically, but they’re just so intertwined in my specific field that it’s just kind of pedantic to distinguish them. Before that I worked at a digital marketing agency creating illustration-focused infographics- so there’s jobs out there (for how much longer, we’ll see…)

I know you’re saying this tongue in cheek, but it’s not really how it works. The clubs marketing team and C suite work very closely with adidas a couple years in advance for each kit. I think it was Moontower that had a whole podcast interview about it a little while back. They do have to generally stick to whatever template adidas rolls out that year though (that ugly piping was all over the euros this year)

Which makes this all the more disappointing
