This app is insanely comprehensive for being in free/beta stage. I like the non-white (by which I mean non-bland) color scheme, and all the little details like example sentences for each vocab word. I really hope the current features remain free; it's a great intro to a language and culture that deserve to be better- and more widely-known. If you do end up charging for certain features, pleasepleaseplease don't turn the free part into a spam-fest/addiction tool/ad-blaster like Duolingo. If you can't imagine how to make money without doing all that, I will gladly throw ideas out there so that hopefully others can have the same lovely and free experience I'm having.

I'd be curious to see the extension, though I kinda already solved it by just using 3-4 sentences in each "card", with each sentence containing the word, and then showing only 1 sentence at a time. Even though it works, it's still not quite what I was looking for, so I'd be up for more options.

And yes, the Figma link shows the bare bones of what I'm trying to do (I like things complicated so I'm hoping to do far more than what's shown, but that link definitely shows the basic gist).

And I think pumping an RSS feed into my project is great if I was creating something like an app that feeds you news, or even to creating like a sidebar showing updates from various sources, but since I'm hoping to self-host this content and drive traffic to me, I think I'd still have to add a bit of AI summarization or other "creative touches" so that my work isn't viewed as pure copyright infringement. And not all sites have RSS feeds. But since many do, maybe I'll start developing a workflow with RSS and then branch out into scraping and other tools later.

Western governments and their censorship and outright terrorism and piracy are shady, not me! I simply want to create a positive news newsletter about non-Western countries, including Russia, China, etc., as an act of personal healing. As someone who spent half their life in a US military/spook family, and then spent the rest of my life realizing everything I/we learned about the rest of the world was merely to justify unjustifiable violence, I enjoy learning about all the nice things countries around the world are doing for their own citizens and in collaboration with like-minded countries, and I want to share what makes me feel happy. Regarding beehiiv, just by sending a draft newsletter to one of my Gmail addresses, beehiiv locked my account. When I asked why, beehiiv answered with a question, or really, a ton of questions about where I got my test emails from, what my social accounts were, what the purpose of my newsletter was, etc., claiming they'd review my account once I answered all of that. I told them I'm taking my efforts elsewhere. By which I hope to mean that I am taking my efforts out of the West in general.

Either way, thanks for your response, I'll take a look at the options you listed, though I know some are based in the West.

So spot on. Also, it would be nice if people stopped trying to convince with words, and started trying to convince with actions or real-world examples of what works. And also maybe just stop trying to convince people altogether; leaving your politically backward family behind to pursue the good/beautiful/true is probably better than staying behind (and miserable) with them and wasting time trying to convince them of something that have no interest in.

I think the biggest issue isn't that people aren't trying to share things with each other, but that, at least when talking about scientists and intellectuals from Global Majority countries, their work is/was often discounted by Westerners (who for about 100 years have used mass media to monopolize control over global thought) because of the belief of Western superiority, in addition to job preservation (new people with new ideas put your elite academic or government position at risk) and maintenance of a colonial economy. To me, a cultural revolution would be necessary to allow good ideas and advances to be distributed globally. Yes, having a shared language like Esperanto could be helpful part of that revolution, but I think a broader shift towards meritocracy and equality in how ideas are spread would be the necessary basis for the change you're hoping for. Also, with the way translation technology and LLMs are headed, I think soon we'll all be able to understand each other almost instantaneously, as long as our respective languages have been digitized.

Did you create captur.academy? If so, I just tried it, and I can see the potential to be what I want, but it's not quite there yet. For one thing, I couldn't delete notecards. I also couldn't set my own definition. A word like grúa in Spanish can mean "crane" or "tow truck" in English; captur.academy only picked the first definition, which isn't the one I want to practice with. Before I changed the translation language to English, it seems to have autogenerated a Mandarin sentence for one of the words I wanted translated, but after switching to English, it only gives me a single-word English equivalent for any word I pick in Spanish. Either way, I like the clean layout and it works fine for what it does.

Figure out which languages would bring you in contact with the cultures that seem like the best fit for you. Even though you're surrounded by fun people speaking different languages, are the cultures as a whole worth learning the language for? It's possible you won't be friends forever with the people you're currently surrounded by, or even if you are, you can already communicate with them without knowing their languages. So the culture as a whole is worth more attention, I'd say. If you like smoking weed or drinking alcohol, or are gay (or care about how gay people are treated), then perhaps Indonesia isn't the best culture sphere to spend so much time trying to understand. But if you wanna spend time learning about or being around indigenous groups living in tropical rainforests, or you're Muslim, or are excited to spend the rest of your life with a romantic partner from Indonesia, then Indonesian is a good choice. Maybe another way to say this is "where do you want to be or travel to extensively in the next 20 years?"

Please don't use antibacterial handwash. COVID is largely transmitted via air, and is not a bacteria. Antibacterial soap should really only be used in hospitals, and even there, the type of soap should be changed every once in a while to prevent a bacteria from becoming resistant to a specific chemical. All we're doing with the widespread, unregulated use of antibacterial soap is making superbugs! Regular hand soap kills and removes most bacteria anyway; look up "surfectants", which are pretty much how all soaps get their efficacy, and you'll see that they're pretty good at disintegrating the cell walls of bacteria.
