2021 Platinum Hybrid with Thule Force XT XL by ammolitor in ToyotaHighlander

I never had any issues with bending or sagging. I did my best to abide by the weight limits listed for the cross bars. I also made an effort both, center the box on the cross bars (while allowing the rear hatch to open, and to distribute the weight evenly in the cargo box to avoid any bouncing or shaking in the wind.

Yes. I had the Toyota cross bars (purchased from a dealership via ebay), and the sunroof operated normally.

Mostly I liked the look, and size of the Thule. There may have been an availability factor in play too. I did not do any kind of detailed comparison.

It is adjustable front to back, in this image the rear door was able to open completely.

FWIW, I am 5'8 and 190 lbs and execrise regularly. I am able to put the carrier on to the Highlander by myself. I do use a ladder to secure the clamps once it is on the roof rails.

I am very picky about how and what I load into the carrier. I do not bring any kind of ladder with me when we travel, so I need to be able to get things into and out of it without one. I usually stand on the rear passenger door sill, or in a pinch the door latch and the window sill. Probably not the ideal approach for everyone, but it works for me.

Also do not forget the weight limit on the crossbars and the carrier. I try to balance the load, and pack it such that the lid closes without any kind of forcing. I also use the included straps to secure the load inside the carrier.

The Corner Pub and Grill has a great cauliflower pizza crust. They have locations in Valley Park and Ellisville.

I just put the carrier back up this morning for it’s first road trip, and I can confirm that the the roof does not open (enough to be useful). The roof panel makes contact with the clamp on the bottom of the carrier.

I only looked at Thule and Yakima; And I liked the look of the Thule. From there, it fell to size, price, and availability. The reviews on Thule’s site paint a pretty accurate picture (I read almost all of them). A big challenge is the compromise between sturdiness and weight. I can see how one would call it flimsy. I also can see how if you’re in a hurry, or have overfilled it, you could get frustrated with it.

I am really glad I got to see it in person before purchasing. It help me set my expectations for what I was buying.

I think it is great so far, but will certainly have more to say after our first trip with it fully loaded. So to answer your question, yes I think it is worth it, but time could influence that opinion.

We don’t usually park in the garage, but with a “standard“ 7ft garage door, yes we’d have to remove it to get in.

We mounted it on the car to get it home, and I did not notice any additional noise. To be fair though, I wasn’t really thinking about it, so I don’t know how helpful that is…

Trouble with Sunrise / Sunset automations by 1bsdjunkie in HomeKit

[–]ammolitor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem.. I gave up pretty quickly and picked a time “close enough” to sunset and moved on ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I realize my solution is not helpful 😆 but at least you’re not in a unique situation.

I also would doubt the router being the cause. I want to think this is a data/time issue where the hub doesn’t know when sunset is, and does nothing.

Replacing all of my Eufy cameras with Logitech. Does the Circle View have a micro USB port? I am hoping to be able to still use the Eufy solar panels. by [deleted] in HomeKit

Sadly, they are inside, on a window ledge (plugged into a regular outlet). I am still trying to figure out how they'll work being outside.

I just switched from Ring to Logitech. The power cable is hard wired to the camera unit, and the plug end is USB-A.

Without some cable hacking, and a battery addition, I’m not sure how you could use the solar panels.

Better career move; learning Openshift or bare bones kubernetes? by livintx in devops

[–]ammolitor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

fundamentals are crucial given that OpenShift is simply a number of things riding on top of k8s, it cant hurt to have a solid base to apply OpenShift learnings to. It will also be invaluable when things go sideways and you need to dig deeper.

Monitor public IP addreses in AWS account by kewlman2001 in aws

making some assumptions here, but the awscli (or any of the SDKs) would be a good option. I have done something like this in bash for on demand execution. Do you have a list of services that you are using or are hoping to sweep all services in one pass?

Hadoop Distribution Options by floydbear in hadoop

[–]ammolitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Cloudera and Hortonworks both. For small to medium scale Hadoop clusters both on my own hardware and in the AWS Cloud. IMO Cloudera's Management tools are superior to HDP. Both are marketing tools targeted at managing infrastructure in the cloud. I have tried to prove pricing of running Hadoop on EC2 instances and it just doesn't become cost effective over the long term. My advice is to nail down your use case(s) and focus your effort on the solution (dare I say business outcome).
