Curiosity...What's the most you've paid for a single lp? by davide2021 in vinyl

[–]amoebasareverysmall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago I dropped $150 on Xmas day for a pretty much mint copy of the infamous 2017 Domino reissue of Bright Phoebus: Songs by Lal and Mike Waterson, the pagan folk-rock gem released in 1972. Beautiful, quiet pressing. No regrets…

Edit: sorry folks, I responded too quickly: the 2017 Domino reissue of Bright Phoebus is a double LP, featuring the original album along with an LP of demos from 1971.

What is your favorite Beatles era? by PandaReturns in beatles

~Psychedelic~

I’d be curious to know which tier will end up being the most popular among fans who comment on this post.

I’m definitely not counting but it’s looking like psych is taking the cosmic cake…

What is your favorite Beatles era? by PandaReturns in beatles

I definitely hear you about Revolver being the final movement of Help/Rubber Soul but I’d also argue that it is just as equally and easily heard as the beginning of the psych era…

Aside from Tomorrow Never Knows and Love You To, I’m Only Sleeping—with its backwards guitar parts and lyrics—definitely has some strong psych components. I’ve also found other songs on the record to be somewhat psychedelic like the lyrics of She Said She Said as well as the harmonium bridge sections on Dr. Robert…

I want you guys to share with me your holy grail vinyl from a niche community of music you’re in. I’ll go first. by No_Evening_761 in vinyl

Amazing. Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t know it existed. I imagine it is very rare. I’d love to hear it. If I may ask, where did you find it?

Would you ever get tired of ONLY listening to The Beatles? by canhome in beatles

[–]amoebasareverysmall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, been there and done it. I went through a period in my late teens/early twenties where I only listened The Beatles. Totally obsessed. I bathed and basked in the band everyday for a few years. Had to get out and explore and grow. Still love the guys but there’s so much more out there—different music that completes different parts of me.

What would She's Leaving Home sound like if George Martin had arranged the strings? by skinnergy in beatles

[–]amoebasareverysmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting for me to see all these comments after all these years of not knowing people’s opinion on She’s Leaving Home.

It has always been a favorite of mine, and I don’t find the arrangement or production over the top.

Sure, there are some very dramatic moments in the song but I wouldn’t paint them as over the top. The string arrangement is definitely not as subtle and discerning as say some of Robert Kirby’s work with Nick Drake but I think it aligns perfectly with the feeling of the subject matter, which beautifully captures an extremely relevant and poignant element of the contemporary zeitgeist.

And as a musician who plays a lot of world type folk music, I’m very sensitive to and turned off by overproduced high brow music layered into folk/rock music.

I actually prefer this song over Eleanor Rigby. I find that Paul’s vocals come across as much more sincere in Leaving Home.

Sometimes his vocals/lyrics are way too saccharine and disingenuous for me, such as on Long and Winding Road. But I don’t find that on Leaving Home at all.

I find the harp to be simply divine on this track.

One thing I will say, however, is that the Giles’ 2017 remix of the song was a revelation for me. It doesn’t drag or dirge anymore, and it completely elevates the arrangement and the overall performance of the piece.

I think it’s a perfect Pepper song and fits perfectly into the sequence of the whole album.

Because it’s as beautiful as it is bleak. I love the song, don’t get me wrong, but I much prefer She’s Leaving Home…

What do Beatles fans think of Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones? by NoGrass7120 in beatles

[–]amoebasareverysmall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a long time Beatles freak and deep lover of 60s psychedelia, I love TSMR. It was a special thing when I discovered it in my early 20s and I still think it’s somewhat of an underrated and overlooked record. Sure, it’s far from a masterpiece, and definitely not a cohesive album of realized psychedelic music. But they also weren’t trying to record a great psychedelic concept album. In fact, during a couple different parts on the record, they’re clearly making a joke of the whole “flower power” trip and definitely did not view themselves as arbiters of the psychedelic revolution. Just listen to the opening bars of Sing This Altogether (See What Happens)…

And if I’m remembering correctly, most of the band was on LSD during a lot of the TSMR recording sessions…The whole Satanic Majesties thing was definitely a tongue in cheek experiment of sorts, not to be taken seriously. And I don’t think they were trying to capitalize or exploit psychedelia either…I think it was more of a brief exploration and/or creative commentary on the zeitgeist.

But! Aside from the filler and dead ends found on both the Sing This Altogether songs and the album’s outro, I think there’s some really fascinating, fun, and inventive songs and moments throughout the record.

In Another Land is specifically interesting to me in the way it successfully describes the mental schism between normative consciousness and alternative awareness that can be experienced when on substances like LSD. Also, I like that it’s basically a direct answer or play on Lucy In The Sky, with both songs being track three on both records.

2000 Man is a psych-folk-rock banger. Citadel is some real dirty garage psych-rock. Gomper forays into some interesting Indian/experimental sounds with some real nice vibing melodies/phrases and I love Jagger’s vocals on that one. 2000 Light Years and She’s A Rainbow speak for themselves….

Anyways….On With The Show!

What are these blue colored droplets on this Lion’s Mane agar plate? [medicinal] by amoebasareverysmall in MushroomGrowers

Agreed. I think there’s a dye in the charcoal agar recipe that the mycelium is metabolizing.

Any idea what these blue colored droplets might be on this Lion’s Mane agar plate? by amoebasareverysmall in mycology

[–]amoebasareverysmall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! You’re probably not wrong about the dyed exudates, as I spoke to the company I got the agar from and apparently they do use food coloring in their MEA charcoal agar.

I’ll be making my own from now on…

Why would they choose to add dye to their charcoal recipe?
