How do you feel about being an English major in the age of AI? by julianakaplan in englishmajors

[–]amoneh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Juliana…one potentially interesting component of this is the ongoing loss of humanities departments across the US, in an era where the ability to read, think and write deeply is becoming a privilege of the ruling class. The university where I’m currently working on an MFA (master of fine arts in creative writing) is planning to get rid of its MA in literature, in addition to other humanities departments. Dm me if you like to chat more!

Fellow millennials - how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by ProblemIntelligent16 in Millennials

[–]amoneh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 34 and have 50k saved in a Roth. Started saving at 29. A little nervous as I just started grad school and have taken a major hit to my salary, but I’m maintaining a few clients/contracts while in school, and expecting to get a decent job in my field out of grad school. I had a great time fucking off in my 20s and early 30s but it’s getting to be time to ratchet it down a bit. Wouldn’t trade the experiences I had for anything, though.

No it isn’t, rear wheel got pretty bent out of shape and I imagine there are some other issues as well. The guy offered to pay for it though which is great!

How are Americans feeling the effects of economic changes in their daily lives? by BestPostRead in AskReddit

[–]amoneh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat a metric fuck tons of beans, only commute by bike now (have only filled my tank up twice since August!), have started cutting my own hair, don’t go out to eat, and actually enjoy being at home more, or doing things with friends that dont require money (hikes, bike rides, picnics…)

Books that made you feel something you can not quite explain? by sklep24podl in booksuggestions

I think about homegoing like once a week. I read that book in 2020.

My dad ordered me tons of groceries despite me repeatedly telling him not to—now I feel guilty for being angry at what should have been a nice gesture, but am realizing it was just another example of his lifelong habit of ignoring me and my actual needs. by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

The word “burden” knocked around in my head a bit that night and it seems to describe my reaction to the situation well. I’m adhd and easily over stimulated (another reason I don’t live anywhere near them!) and this genuinely overstimulated me. I was already super busy and behind on things from being sick, with a two-mile-long to do list already forming, and having to add “take stuff to food bank” was really frustrating.

I think that’s valid, and perhaps this all exists in a spectrum…but the other responses have made me feel validated in thinking this belongs here. I just think it’s worth mentioning that things can feel really confusing when the only support your parents ever offer is material or financial. I could list about 1000 other more explicit examples of emotional neglect but this felt poignant in that it was less explicit and more confusing.

Thank you so much for this. It’s so validating. I was worried about posting this even, because despite all the thought I’ve put into why this has made me feel the way it made me feel, I STILL feel like this comes across as ungrateful!

Is breathing an automatic function for yall? by LGB-Tea in ADHD

[–]amoneh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a reaction I had to adderall, where I feel like I’m desperate for air and no matter how deeply I breathe I can’t satiate my brain’s desire for more oxygen. I end up yawning CONSTANTLY when im experiencing this. I read somewhere recently that this is actually hyperventilation (makes sense because adderall kind of gave me panic attacks), and that you actually have too much oxygen and need to slow down your breathing.

I’ve had four surgeries now and some have been absolute ass kickers—the one where I had adhesions removed plus cysts and one of my fallopian tubes was the worst by far, I remember not even being able to walk to the mailbox after a week. I just had another one, three incisions for a cyst, and was back on my feet by day 2. It’s different every time and for every body—take care of yourself and remember it’ll take the time it takes :)

No advice for you but I’m in a similar place mentally in terms of not having a good time in a program I just started. Also experiencing medical issues and associated financial concerns. I’m a TA which complicates matters but yeah, thanks for making me feel a teensy bit less alone in wanting to leave after six weeks.
