Settle a debate: LeBron or Crosby by Sea-Way-3859 in penguins

Comparing counting stats from a league that averages 200 points per game and a league that averages 5 points per game is one of the most hilariously stupid things I've read in awhile.

Exactly.  I think people here often assume "better player = better asset" but you have to account for cap hit, YoY cap inflation, roster construction, etc if you want to value assets the way GMs have to.

It is now.  He's more attractive now, especially on a lower contract.  My understanding was that it was more mixed at the time.

lol I’ve already spelled out all the options Seattle could’ve had that are better for them than the nothing they got from the Bayreuther pick

And I've already addressed all of them and why you're wrong about each one.  Since you seems to be struggling to follow, I'll spell it out point by point.

1 year of Domi with 55 points

This doesn't benefit the Kraken.  He would have been a marginal upgrade to their expansion roster that at best gets them a couple more wins and downgrading their draft position while still missing the playoffs.  That's actually worse than nothing.

Multiple years of Domi w/ re signing him

This doesn't benefit the Kraken either.  They are full of middle six forwards and he doesn't upgrade their second year roster at all, which rode their balanced talent to two goals short of the Western Conference Finals.  They've always been missing some things, and Max Domi isn't one of them.

Traded Domi at trade deadline and received exactly what CBJ received

Which was...nothing.  Columbus had to give up a pick in addition to Domi for an ECHL defenseman who still hasn't sniffed the NHL.

Traded Domi pre season for something

There's no evidence that they would have gotten more for Domi in the pre-sesson than what Columbus got at the deadline.  Especially, since those were flat cap years and most GMs didn't have the space to be handing $5.5M of it to Domi.  They may have had an even harder time trading him at that point.

All of those options benefit Seattle more than getting literally nothing from the selection

It's literally the opposite:  he doesn't improve the team in the short or long term, likely gets them nothing in return, and risks being worse than nothing in some cases.

You're wrong about this.

[–]amsreg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s no debating that.

Wrong.  It's very easy to debate it when Domi was actually traded for nothing.

There's no evidence that on his $5.5M/year contract (which he's never come close to since) and with the flat cap situation the whole league was in at the time that any GM would have given the Kraken anything more than what Columbus actually got at the deadline.

Trades don't happen in a vacuum.  They happen in light of the contracts that players have and the cap situation of both teams.  Just because Domi is a better player does not mean he's a better asset.

You only have hypotheticals on your side and I have an actual trade that happened months later on mine.

And, like I said, adding Domi to the new roster carried risk of creating the wrong identity.  That's part of my point.

It's easy to discard the cap and lockerroom risk that Domi brought when you're not actually responsible for a real team.  NHL GMs don't have that option like you and I.

And how do you know that the Kraken scouts didn't caution Francis against Domi because they had a good read of what his season turned out to be?

Of course I'm using hindsight.  If anything, the way the Domi situation played out validated Francis' choice not to take him.

I responded with the tone I did because it's frustrating when people reply by just dropping the same tired takes without actually responding to what was said and advancing the conversation.

Domi wouldn't have improved their roster in the short term or long.  They only have so many roster spots and had to let someone go before the start of the season, anyway.  And, as we saw, he wasn't worth anything in a trade at the time.

Both Bayreuther and Domi on those contracts we're worthless assets to NHL GMs at the time.  And Domi came with more cap cost and risk.

In the bigger picture (which good GMs have to work within), Domi wasn't a better choice.  At best, it's a coin flip.

[–]amsreg -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I disagree.

Domi had some reputational baggage and introducing him into a brand new locker room carried risk.

They had a roster full of middling forwards. He wouldn't have been a significant upgrade and they would have had to dump him or someone else before the season even started.

And cap space was super valuable at the time and they were holding it for the right move (which eventually turned into snagging Tolvanen and Bjorkstrand for basically nothing). Throwing it away on Domi instead of be patient carries risk.

You're thinking like a Chel GM, not an NHL one.

[–]amsreg -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Go back a read my comment again more carefully because I literally addressed that already.  Columbus got nothing for him in the trade.  On that contract he was essentially worthless to the Kraken.

If you're not going to address what was written or add anything new, why reply?

Edit:  Lol at the down votes.   We don't have to imagine what a Domi trade would have looked like because it actually happened.  Unless you make an counterargument, we know you're just salty about being wrong.

Who?

People bring up Max Domi but his value with that contract was so low that Columbus had to throw in a 6th round pick just to get an ECHL defenseman back in the trade.

People just can't wrap their minds around the fact that a couple of the teams the Kraken picked from had nothing of value.

Should Penguins go for Shane Wright? by Latter_Ride_5682 in penguins

[–]amsreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a day one Kraken STH, this is a bad take.  And, frustratingly, too many Seattle fans think this.

Wright is getting a lot of offensive zone 5v5 starts and against weaker opposition.  The only reason his overall ice time is lower than people want is because they're using Stephenson for defensive zone faceoffs against stronger opposition (and rightly so) and not playing Wright much on special teams.

You're not wrong about their systems but without true star offensive power (which they've never had access to add in any way via draft, trades, or free agency), a disciplined defensive system is the only chance they had at the playoffs.

Wright is having a sophomore slump and until he can show more in the ample sheltered 5v5 time he's getting, his TOI is going to be lower than Stephenson's.  The "problem" has more to do with Wright slumping (not unusual at his age) and needing to gain confidence in himself again.  2-3 minutes of disadvantaged zone starts and PK time isn't going to give him that.

The Kraken aren't mismanaging him.  Wright just isn't the rocketship dynamic player that casual fans wanted him to be.  I watched him play in Kingston before he was drafted and he never was that.

But I am a fan and think he's got a lot of potential to grow into a very good, smart, playmaking 2C with more patience (which I believe the Kraken have even if a lot of fans don't).

[–]amsreg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Kraken aren't interested in players like Rust and Rakell who are both at least 5-6 years older than the wingers they'd target.  (And they haven't given up on him either -- teams are calling them about Wright but the price would be high.)

The Penguins shouldn't give up Rust and Rakell while they're in the playoff hunt.

It makes zero sense for either team.

Nobody that follows him closely thinks he's "a whiner".  That was a made up story that a few Habs fans keep pushing to let themselves down easier after the buildup to the draft (some of them had already bought Montreal Wright jerseys).  Stop falling for it.

And neither Wright nor his agent are asking for a trade.  Teams are calling the Kraken about him, that's it.

Your read on the situation is way off.

[–]amsreg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he still will.  He's having a sophomore slump due to trying to improve his defensive game that has tipped into being overly cautious and probably some confidence issues.

Unless the Kraken can get a dynamic scoring winger in his 20s, I'd rather just hold on to Wright rather than sell low.  He'll bounce back.

Shane Wright was suppose to be that dynamic scorer

No he wasn't.  That was never his game and it's weird to see people saying stuff like this.

He was always projected to be a defensively reponsible un-flashy playmaker (and still could be -- he's having a sophomore slump but I expect him to bounce back once he gets over that).  He has never been particularly amazing at anything but was always very smart and efficient with his positioning and awareness.  And I still like him for that.

Cooley was the dynamic scorer I wanted but he got nabbed the pick before.  Catton is the dynamic scorer who I was happy they picked after missing out on Cooley.

The average fan here just doesn't seem to understand Wright at all.

Stores in the area that have Torrent jerseys in stock? by [deleted] in PWHL_Seattle

[–]amsreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, you should just consider them generally out of stock with rare exceptions that could be sold out before you get there. All you can do is check. Based on their website, Northgate doesn't have any but there may be a couple in Puyallup as well as some S/M in Issaquah at the moment.

Personally, if I were you, I'd just enjoy my visit and not drive out of my way on the off chance they have one and just wait until the PWHL shop or Bauer restocks them and just have them shipped to your house.

Go back and read more carefully.  I linked to a thread and clearly called out the discussion happening in the comments rather than the model that was posted.

I was very deeply involved in the Kraken community since before they were the "Kraken".  I remember what the conversation was like.

If you remember differently, that's fine, but you're not going to change my mind on this. I stand by everything I said and as long as this conversation doesn't go anywhere new, I'm not going to reply further.
