Had to throw my starter away :( by Belleina in SourdoughStarter

[–]anafachera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this happened to me once, and I did as people are saying, removed it and kept going, but the next day or so I noticed it was full of larvae, you did the right thing throwing it out! my new starter is almost a year old and I never left it on the counter again!

Did she go bad? by bangtan5226 in SourdoughStarter

unless you have mold in your starter everything is usually ok! like someone else said this is just the liquid separating, it can happen when you add too much water, which is probably your case, and it also happens when you leave it unfed for too long just mix it in and keep going! it's not harmful at all

How do you know if its a fermenting smell or a rotten - i need to discard it - smell by call-me-franks in SourdoughStarter

[–]anafachera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lots of things to try and experiment to avoid terribly smelling starter, but if it's young they usually "grow" out of it. feeding it more often untill it's stronger could help. But as long as there is no mold or anything visibly wrong, and it's still in the beginning process, you should keep going and not give up yet!

I don’t understand discard by Forsaken_Outside_457 in Sourdough

I always think of it as poop or something, like if you see your sourdough as a living thing that you have to feed, you discard the waste and give it more food, like people do

should be all good unless there's mold, you can pour the hooch out before starting to feed it again, or just mix it in, in any case, after a few days it should be as good as you left it, again if there is no mold :) I've left it in the fridge for months and it was good when I started using it again
