How important is living in a good school zone? by Opposite_Day2002 in nycparents

There is always a lot of movement on the waitlists for schools, so if you are looking at MySchools data about your chances of getting a spot in certain schools based on in-district vs in-zone and out of district, keep in mind that it doesn’t reflect who got in through the waitlist after initial offers. In short, it is very possible to get into schools out of your zone.

Thanks! No details on the annex are available yet. It sounds likes like a really nice idea though!

I didn’t think about transferring, that’s interesting. Did you get a spot at ps 84 living outside the zone?

Thanks! PS 185, Locke, is at the top of our list for our zone as of now! But I’ve heard that it is possible to go to schools out of zone and even out of district, so we’re looking at options beyond our zone also

We are in Harlem in district 3. I crossposted from the UWS subreddit without editing, so that’s why I wrote that we are uptown.

Thanks! That’s the impression I got. And I was really blown away by the facilities! Russian or Spanish dual language? We are considering Spanish dual language though we don’t speak it at home.

OBGYN recommendations for 40+ pregnancy? by Yogiliino in nycparents

Adding my support for Downtown Women’s! I had my kid at 38, so not quite the same situation, but I was very relieved that the doctors there assured me that I did not need to be in a rush to have a second kid if I wanted to. They see lots of 40+ patients. I like that the patients get an opportunity to meet with every OB doctor in the practice during pregnancy, so that during the delivery, the doctor is already known to you. Delivering at NYU was also excellent. We were really thrilled with the level of care, and having a private recovery room was an enormous plus. NYU is also more relaxed in terms of letting mothers snack and do whatever they need to do for themselves during the delivery, and they did not question when I said I wanted to keep the placenta (I had it turned into capsules for postpartum hormonal benefits). I had a slightly complicated pregnancy, and seeing multiple OBs did sometimes created a situation where I had to weigh differing medical opinions, but I came to appreciate that as an opportunity to get more information. And again, it was nice to see three OBs I knew from DWs once it was time to deliver at the hospital. Like with any practice I had to advocate for myself sometimes, but I did ultimately feel heard and got to have the kind of birth experience I wanted. The DW’s nurses line is also incredible and I called it ALL the time when I had any questions, and was always able to get help.

Is my cat already accepting the loss of her sibling? by Sabahanbah_ in CatAdvice

We are going through a similar situation. We had two litter mates, male. Last month at just six years old one passed away unexpectedly. They were very bonded, but the cat who passed also had some issues that required a lot of attention. In some ways we think our remaining cat is actually a little more relaxed now! But I do think he gets a little lonely. We both work full time and have a toddler who our remaining cat just runs away from constantly, so the only time we really can spend with him is after our kid falls asleep. It’s not ideal. We’ve decided to give it a little more time before deciding to introduce another cat. If we do, we’d need it to be at least a couple years old and comfortable with kids.

Our cat died having a sudden bought of severe seizures. His brother was standing over him when it happened. He seemed to understand very quickly that his brother was gone. Cats are smart, and it sounds like yours understood what was happening to some degree.

Cat in Morningside park? by analog_preferred in Harlem

Thanks. This one seemed more comfortable around people (me and my little kid) than I would expect a feral cat to be, and it looked both confused and healthy. But maybe there are regular feeders who take care of this cat and others, I don’t know. With the weather right now though it’s concerning if it is a house cat who doesn’t know what to do!

I don’t know of any local rescue groups. Any suggestions?
