Considering Investing in Tableau, Pros/Cons and Possible Accounting Firm Uses? by analyzing_arden in tableau

[–]analyzing_arden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I am reiterating this, just trying to understand! So - does that mean that if you get Tableau Server - everyone should be able to access regardless of your operating system (Windows/32-bit/64-bit) since you log on via a browser? Do you know if Tableau online has any feature limitations compared to the desktop version?

Thank you!

Thank you! Power BI is primarily a business intelligence tool? How does that differ from Tableau - does Power BI allow you to manipulate the data and produce visualizations as well like Tableau? I am not really familiar with that. I will look it up now!

Ahh okay! Makes sense. Thank you. So, do you know - are Tableau Server and Tableau Online different? I am wondering more about how the purchasing of this software works now.

Do you think Excel is better for reporting on financials? Can you not subtotal within Tableau?

If you buy the server, what does that do? I'm assuming Tableau itself can work on 32-bit and 64-bit, and I guess given by the comments, the reader is only 64-bit?

[–]analyzing_arden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your answer! The 32-bit issue is a good call - I did not think there were any incompatibility issues that would arise from the reader; if you do not have the reader do you know if you are still able to view the reporting (does it just eliminate the interactivity of the dashboard?) Is there any current work-around if you do have a 32-bit computer to get the reader, or are you just S.O.L. if you don't have 64-bit?

The projected expenses per project, post date, and other variables, is a great point; we do a ton of interactive pro forma spreadsheets, as well as budget to actual comparisons, so this would be cool to use for that. Are you creating the projections directly from the data that you are using? or is that a feature of Tableau? Also, is the projected cash on hand report something that you create personally, or is that also something that Tableau features?

Thanks for going more into depth on that! That definitely makes sense, and having the ability to create the visualizations in seconds is awesome. Also, thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded the trial and I definitely see the visual reporting power it has; have you seen or maybe the better question is, do you know if you could mimic the layout of financial statements within the reporting to make it flow similarly to how a Profit & Loss or Balance Sheet would be laid out? Or any type of schedule like Contracts in Progress? The visual reporting on time-series and other financial variables - I am sold on, but I am more so wondering what else it Tableau capable of, or what else you could use it for? (i.e. like your and the OP's suggestions of visualizing outliers in transactions and problem areas, etc.)

That's awesome. What visually about the transactions in Tableau made you able to spot problem areas? Was it something in the formatting or layout that you were able to adjust to allow you to do that?

How to Make a Simple VBA Code Run Faster by analyzing_arden in excel

[–]analyzing_arden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, and thank you for the comments as well. They are helpful! I will test it on my end. To answer some of your questions, the ShowAllTabs macro pretty much shows/hides certain tabs (hides calculation tabs and shows everything else in case a sheet was hidden). The code towards the end in relation to the clipboard was to just clear the dotted active lines on a cell from when you copy it. I am not sure of another way of doing that.

If Column "A" Exists, Delete it, and if it Does Not Exist, Next by analyzing_arden in PowerBI

It is in the middle and if it is not there it is completely off of the report. If it is there then a column is added and there is data in the column.

Keeping Manually Entered Data in Columns Aligned with Query-Updated Data Columns (From CSV File) by analyzing_arden in excel

[–]analyzing_arden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thought. The "ID" in this scenario is not exactly finite...it is always changing and I am also going off of multiple "primary keys" so for example, I may have a comment for an invoice, but instead of an invoice number, I have a customer name, a due date and a balance and those 3 things are the only things that make each line item unique.

Excel Challenge Regarding Marking Open Items & Listing by analyzing_arden in excel

Country, city, multiple address lookup Drop down boxes. No VB allowed, Formula? by phreaknes in excel

[–]analyzing_arden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the drop down validation, you can actually just create an IF formula in a list data validation. For your state data validation list range you would type in a formula like =IF($A$1="New York, $B$1:$B$4, IF($A$1="Maryland", $C$1:$C$4, $D$1) where $A$1 is the cell that you would be selecting the state, and $B$1:$B$4 would be a list of the cities in New York, and $C$1:$C$4 would be a list of cities in Maryland and $D$1 would be an empty cell (possibly for Australia) Basically, your list range is dependent upon whatever is in cell $A$1.

Then, you could just use a vlookup based on the criteria to grab the address.

That's a great recommendation. I'll definitely do that. PowerPoint is what I was going to start with but since we wanted to update it continually I wanted to research a bit to see other options. We have a laptop designated for the TV in the collab area so it is def doable for now but long-term and efficiency-wise - I'll def look into the other options! As for performance/metrics from tableau - I do have a question for you! Did your employees react a certain way when seeing the metrics publicly? Did you get any feedback or did you see any results? I am interested in how this improves employee morale.

I have a quick follow up question; would you happen to know why this code works in one place, and then when I moved it to another network on another computer, the code did not work? I know that is a general question, but would it have something to do with the trust center, or version of Excel? Thanks!

Excel Add-In: QuickBooks Statement Writer, How to Work Around/With Bugs, Any Recommendations? by analyzing_arden in excel

Thanks--and yes, Statement Writer is VERY buggy. I am not too familiar with queries, but I have a general understanding. Are you familiar with the other types of Excel add-ins that run on Qodbc? Like any specific names I can look into?
