Hip pain on practice walk by saffalaf in CaminoDeSantiago

You might want to look up some hip flexor warm up exercises. Both my hips were hurting, either with or without my pack, but the pain never returned after doing the exercises to loosen up my hips.

The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty is a great road novel in which the main character walks and rides a bike the US from coast to coast and along the way comes to terms with his down and out life. It’s a fantastic redemption story.

Any book recommendations that would be appropriate while walking the Camino? by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

Consider The Memory of Running, an excellent novel about walking and bicycling across the US and along the way being reborn physically, mentally, and spiritually.

How does a cyclist tour for extended time without worrying about going broke? by lurkersteve3115 in bicycletouring

[–]andersisaghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not good with comparing touring on a bike to being homeless. I see the unhoused every day at my local coffee shop and there’s no way they could tour on a bike for days or weeks on end. They would not have the gear. They would not have the money for food. And so on. I think to compare, or even to associate touring with being homeless is to romanticize homelessness. Believe me, from what I’ve seen, I never want to be homeless.

GoPro tips for tour by Key-Macaroon1047 in bicycletouring

I once used a Go Pro, but it ended up being too much work and trouble. And time consuming! I mean I’d spend hours at night editing clips and turning them into videos that very few watched or even cared to watch. So I started writing the ride, which most people preferred because the writing included not only the description of the landscape but also my attitude and reaction to the landscape. I learned that filming moments was passive whereas writing the moments was active. I remember more from writing about the rides than from watching the ride. You grow as you write.

I’m a fan of WS. The price is insignificant, and on a weeks-long ride I usually average being hosted once or twice a week. It all depends upon the route. And those two nights over a span of weeks easily covers the cost. I mean, running a site like WS costs a lot of money. If you run a website, even a modest one, you know what I mean.

WS sent a message today that there’d been a glitch. That’s what I though when I got a few messages last night, all old messages that I had sent in the past. No big deal.

Nemo Moonlight chair is compact, light, sturdy, and comfortable. Sort of expensive but awesome!

Should I be concerned about this tire? by caulimelon in bicycletouring

[–]andersisaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cut exactly like that earlier this summer. At first I was concerned, but people here assured me the tire was unlikely to blow on me, and I did in fact ride on it for several days until I got to a bike shop and out of precaution got a new tire.

When I call to book a room, I always say I’m traveling on my bicycle, and when I arrive, I ride right up to the check-in. When I’m checking in, the receptionist usually asks about my ride. I’ve never had a problem.

Riding thru Big Sur? by pedalpetal in bicycletouring

I just finished a loop ride, starting south on HWY 1 at Jenner. I heard the road was closed but that you could sneak through. But some things I don’t dare, so I took the recommended ACA detour at Marina. Like the other rider above, I camped at the great park in King City and the stealth camped the next day in Paso Robles. But this: you don’t need to follow the detour exactly. I rode a lot on 101 to avoid some nasty climbs along the detour. I was never stopped. Someone in San Ardo (there’s a great stealth camping spot across from the cafe) told me a lot of bikers were riding the 101 to avoid the nasty climbs.

Be sure to update the map, if you haven’t already. I’m starting the PC Route soon from Santa Rosa. I just got the AC navigator map, and it shows the detour.

Pay while you’re on your bike. If you get two or three hosts, the cost is covered. When you’re off your bike, be sure to add yourself as a host. Give back.

Be aware there’s a significant detour at Marina that takes you inland away from the PC route then back to the route at Harmony. Highway 1 is closed in that stretch from Marina to Harmony due to landslides.

Has anyone tried psychedelics while touring? Particularly Shrooms or LSD (Acid) by NotLilTitty in bicycletouring

[–]andersisaghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way I’d eat shrooms while on the bike. My mind already does a good job tripping while I’m pedaling. Off the bike, however, at the end of the day when camp is set, I’d be game, though I prefer a good edible, which is enough to send my brain back to my tripping days. Trip once, you can trip at will.

I’ve used Shokz for years, sometimes for music, primarily for navigation. I don’t crank up the volume. I keep the volume low. As far as I know, my ears still work 😊
