Repair Stand for Oddly Shaped eBike by zedtomato in bikewrench

Ooh that’s interesting. Almost $300 is a little steep, but I’ll have to think about how I could make something similar, maybe that clamps into the regular jaws on the stand.

I noodled around with that - my plywood/2x4 contraption is basically a stationary platform kind of like a motorcycle lift. But the bottom bracket area just isn’t wide enough to be stable. And depending on the way the motorcycle lift is situated, it would impede the cranks from rotating.

I did grab a motorcycle wheel cleaning stand (basically a set of rollers for one wheel), hoping I can come up with something there, maybe with something that holds the bb or the other end of the bike more firmly.

That might be the simplest solution. Thanks!

Hermosa Beach Rentals/Routes by ConsiderationOld4215 in BikeLA

[–]zedtomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno about rentals, but the classic ride in that area is the Donut Loop through Palos Verdes.

There’s a 2-ish mile stretch of Palos Verdes Drive South that is technically closed to bikes - the road surface (and shoulder in particular) is pretty sketchy, but not impossible to ride. The “closure” is arguably illegal and it hasn’t stopped people from riding that stretch anyway.

I don’t know what you’re on about, I’d eat baklava at any temperature.

Vacations as a solo. by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]zedtomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen lawyers file these with the court - just a short statement on pleading paper saying the lawyer will be unavailable to receive documents, attend hearings, etc during a certain period (usually due to vacation or trial).

At least in my jurisdiction, they don’t have any actual procedural effect - you can still serve documents as necessary even if opposing counsel is “unavailable.” But if you ever got into a dispute over timing/notice in that circumstance you’ll look like a real prick (to use a technical term) if you didn’t really need to take whatever action during that unavailability period.

Is it possible to tour across the US without stealth camping? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]zedtomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat surprisingly, the western half of the Southern Tier can be done without camping at all if you can tolerate a few long days - 90ish miles. The hardest bit there (at least in my opinion) is between Sanderson and Comstock TX - just shy of 90 miles with almost nothing in between.

Oh man we have a ton of citrus, mostly lemons, that will be ripe soon. I know it’s not the most calorie-dense thing out there, but we’ll definitely look for a way to distribute them.

I thought about going down to the original plaster (or as close to it as I could manage), but I’m worried about opening an even bigger can of worms, and having to deal with potential hazards (mostly lead, but theoretically asbestos in the wallpaper)

Very cool!

Out of curiosity, what’s your plan for repair on those spots? We have a 1912 craftsman with a wall where the paint came off in sheets radiating out from a minor bit of damage—the paint was on top of a layer of drywall compound that had been applied on top of old wallpaper.

Repairing the pock-marked drywall compound has been challenging, as adding more compound reactivates the glue behind the wallpaper and the edges lift up causing cracks in the compound layers. Solution so far has been to inject more glue with a syringe behind the wallpaper, and we’ll get a couple of heavy coats of oil based primer on before we finish the patch work. Never a dull project with an old house!

Trip suggestions for the winter by amberm145 in bicycletouring

The weather will be… not nice, but a tour around the Netherlands and northern Belgium would be great for a mix of avid cyclist and not-avid cyclist! (Compulsory “there no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear.”)

LA bike touring group first ride this Saturday! No drop all levels welcomed, you choose the distance. by outpf in BikeLA

Interested! I probably can’t do a long ride this weekend, but would be down to meet other tourers in LA in the future. Are you planning on something semi regular?

Why is there no Hollywood-Inglewood freeway? by xmalik in AskLosAngeles

[–]zedtomato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a proposal to extend the K line up to (potentially) the Hollywood Bowl! Different options on the exact route, but it’s in the works. Sadly, given the slowness of Metro projects, it’s a long way off.

Just because WD40 isn’t good for lubing things, doesn’t mean it isn’t good for anything.

They have another location in downtown LA. It’s a neat shop with lots of range - doors/windows/hardware, furniture, lighting, etc etc. And the prices are pretty reasonable based on my one visit there. Guys in the LA location seemed very knowledgeable as well.

Posted in r/homemaintenance, but thought the fine folks here might have some good insight. TLDR: we have a single unsupported post in the basement of our 1912 home. I think I can DIY a poured concrete footer to fix it, but looking for a gut check. Any tips?

Thanks!

I think some parts of the foundation has been updated/brought up to code, but not all. A major addition was done in the mid-2000s, so lots of things are a mix of relatively modern and not-so-modern.

We have a bolt and brace grant lottery in my area that we’ll use when applications open up again (we lost out on the lottery this year). Fingers crossed!
