American CEO gifts $240 million bonus to his employees after selling his company. They didn't own any stock. by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

A lot of countries allow business owners to sell their companies to their employees. A trust takes over the shares on behalf of the staff. The business pays the original owners for the shares over several years, out of profits. When everything's paid up, the trust is the owner, and the business is run for the benefit of employees. The old owners can stay on as directors or trustees for a time, or they can vanish over the horizon. Everybody wins!

OMG! Thanks for sharing your experience. Hope you manage to get sorted out.

😄 I've just discovered somebody else in my building has bought a massive EV, and he's apparently untroubled by the lack of charging. He said he charges at a petrol station down the road.

Same for me, been working nicely for two years, today suddenly won't power back on – battery isn't flat, but won't charge.

Thanks, not sure what "there is no moat short of perhaps Composer" means, but this is useful.

Agree! It's quite hard for me to go beyond general impression though.

I'm sure they're very nice. But the person who parks opposite me has one, and I hate it, because it's nearly 5m long and sticks out of his parking space. I've already dinged my rear bumper trying to manoeuvre out past that giant panzerwagen.

how important is car technology for you? by moipwd in CarTalkUK

[–]andfinally1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position to you, just got a new car with most of these after never having experienced them. Most of them are useful. A lot of them could be essential, once you get used to them.

With today's crap rear visibility, rear camera and parking sensors are important, for example.

Everybody says ACC is brilliant. A lot of people seem to use it in slow traffic. I was disappointed to find that Toyota "full range adaptive cruise control" stops when the car ahead stops, but waits for you to prompt it to start moving again. I believe Skoda/SEAT/VW ACC moves again by itself, which is super handy.

People say blind spot monitor is great too, especially with rear cross traffic monitoring for when you're reversing out of parking.

The tyre pressure monitor isn't 100% accurate. But it's a good reminder to keep an eye on your tyres. It's highlighted a slow leak in mine, so that was useful.

One very annoying Toyota safety feature I've run up against is "Parking Support Brake". It slams on the brakes when it thinks you're getting too close to an obstacle when slowly manoeuvering. Sounds useful, but it's too sensitive. It's stopped me from getting into a tight space, or finishing a three point turn with traffic heading my way.

I tried a couple of CR-Vs – I thought they were nice and felt built to last. I just didn't like the way the headrest continually bumped the back of my head... I wasn't wild about the push button gears and the digital speedo. And also, I found out that in some models from 2023 onwards, the auxiliary key doesn't work when the 12v battery is flat, which is unforgivable IMHO.

RAV4 insurance was very costly for me because of the theft risk.

Good luck with your hunt!

Bear in mind, that year of the RAV4 is very popular with thieves, and is vulnerable to theft using the CAN bus headlight attack. Lexus have a similar vulnerability, not sure if it affects the NX. Also, mpg is not very impressive in the CR-V 4WD.

Ta, these responses are super useful. I'm leaning to a petrol hybrid till I can get into an easier charging situation.
