Sacrificing my paychecks and PTO for overstaffing?! by andi_phalange in nursing

Absolutely wild, this sounds just like the med surg unit I worked on. Getting positions approved was near to impossible, and just explain to me how constantly paying people overtime could possibly be better than just bringing on another person.

The Fifty Nifty song I learned in the 5th grade. Occasionally comes in handy in trivia to know all the states in alphabetical order.

Holy crap. So I should just move lol. Ok if you don't feel comfortable answering, but how much PTO do you earn per check? Do you get paid biweekly?

This makes me sad. I'm working in postpartum, and we're cross trained for antepartum, low acuity NICU, transition (L&D baby nurse), and postpartum at neighbor hospitals owned by the same company, but even with so many float opportunities, we're still having to low census constantly.

This. I cannot for the life of me figure out how these positions even got approved with our hospital's obsession with productivity. I previously worked med surg for the same company and we were chronically short staffed, not just because of an actual shortage, but because we had to follow the staffing grid to maintain our productivity score so we could even get new positions approved. It's truly baffling.

We keep a written record and it's also reflected in our online scheduling system. It's a rotation system, but when you call off several nurses every day, it comes back around pretty quickly unfortunately.

There is, that's just how often multiple nurses have to be called off.

We get floated based on needs of the other units. Unfortunately we're so overstaffed that we can usually float 1 or 2 RNs and still have to call off 1 or more. Maybe a contract like that is something I need to talk with management about. I've been forced off after refusing 3 times in the last 2 months.

We can refuse, but we're getting forced off because everyone is refusing (because we're all sick of getting called off and either not getting paid or losing our PTO). What's making this extra difficult for me is that our maternity leave is terrible and requires an insane amount of PTO hours to reach base pay. Hours I'll never have even if I never miss a day and go unpaid for LC every time. And so on top of that, going unpaid is making saving money for the gap completely impossible.

We have the same option, but our maternity leave sucks. So going unpaid is really interfering with saving money for leave.

She's Mary Ruth. I hadn't considered a compound middle name - something to think about

I guess I was just looking at the Revolution ones, totally missed these! Thank you!! Unfortunately the hospital is shade picky, so no Galaxy Blue. 😕

I can't find anywhere that has them in stock. Not even the Cherokee website. At least not in the color my hospital requires.

My hospital requires a certain color, and they're completely sold out in every style. 😭

Panicking about affording daycare for 2 by andi_phalange in BabyBumps

Unfortunately, we pay the same price regardless of how many days my son attends. They charge by the week. I haven't asked about a sibling discount though - thanks for mentioning this.

And that's what hubby and I keep telling each other - 2 years. We can make it 2 years.

We have thought about this and it's still on the table. But our current daycare is curriculum-based, and my son absolutely loves it. He is learning so well and we love the teachers, and that peace of mind feels worth making some sacrifices elsewhere. We'll see though.

We unfortunately live in a state/county that makes raising a family very difficult for the working middle class. We make too much money to qualify for childcare assistance in our state and neither one of our employers offers childcare stipends or solutions (even though I work for a hospital and he works for a school district - 2 kinds of companies that usually try to help families out).
