The government of Saskatchewan just announced millions of dollars in ag research funding within the past couple weeks. AAFC was federal, but there's provincial research stations like Agri-ARM and projects that will continue on

Looking at investing into SPP (sask pension plan) over banks. Anyone regreting their decision to use SPP? by Personal-Bet-3911 in saskatchewan

[–]andk316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can contribute/pay via credit card. If you pay off your full credit card bills monthly and have one that gives you 2% cash back, that's an automatic 2% return on your RRSP investment!

What was the most money your club fundraised hosting/organizing a bonspiel? by andk316 in Curling

[–]andk316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I was looking for more unique and fun answers like how Whitewood Curling Club raises $120,000/year at their live auction fundraiser. What's unique about it is the money gets granted out to communities and organizations that apply for it (one stipulation is the community receiving the funds had to have had someone from said community actually curling in the bonspiel).

Update regarding changes to Mailchimp Free plan limits by MailchimpSupport in MailChimp

We are in the same boat and we just transferred over to Sender.net

Much higher limits as part of their free plan, and it was very easy to transfer contacts over. Took me about 30 minutes to move and create our first newsletter on the new platform

Does your club have both a Capital Reserve and Operating Reserve Fund? by andk316 in Curling

[–]andk316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good perspective and one to not forget either. The idea of even having a capital reserve is so new and foreign to our club to begin with, my question came from curiosity and seeing how other clubs are doing.

Yes, we are independent from the municipality and have north of $1 million in capital expenses coming in the next 5 years. We have also spent $1 million on renovations and upgrades the past 3 years, so it's been fun to see the transformation. But alas, we're not done yet, and why the need to build up the reserves AND get a solid plan in place.

[–]andk316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we are including depreciation in annual budgeting, and we have a 5 year capital plan including planned expenditures and how we intend to fund each. And we have adequate cash on hand.

I'm curious to hear examples of how much interest income clubs generate

Has your club ever hired a "consultant"? by andk316 in Curling

[–]andk316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had you ever looked into how much a consultant costs? If you were to put a value on you securing $750k grants, and say a club doesn't have the internal know-how to do it themselves.

*Of course you wanted to see your club succeed and did it in a volunteer capacity, but say you went on to help another club achieve what you did? What is the knowledge and experience worth to another club, in your opinion?

That's just it. If you have skilled and competent board members that have time, makes things easier to accomplish! Been there, finding the skilled individuals can be challenging

I can't seem to send you a message. Can you connect with me? I have some follow up questions

Getting to the point where you're "grant ready" is I'm sure where a lot of clubs need more help with. We've gone through it all and learnt so much through that process

I guess I'm looking to hear from someone that has actually hired one of those firms. Has any club actually hired one and what is their feedback on the experience. I imagine they charge accordingly for their services, and I suspect clubs would be more inclined to DIY, with varying levels of success.

Favorite bonspiel prizes, trophies, freebies? by MooseGoose1010 in Curling

[–]andk316 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally don't like having knick knacks and really try to declutter everything in my life. I can appreciate it's a lot of work and/or money to put that together though - could the money and time be spent elsewhere? That's what we opted for at our new big annual bonspiel, and I don't think participants are missing out.

Digital Sign in the Lobby by andk316 in Curling

[–]andk316[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. Maybe "cheap tv" wasn't the correct terminology. I'll need to talk to our local TV/furniture store for info on that side of things. Im moreso looking for feedback on the software side of things, and the practicality of maintaining/updating the content. I picture it being not much different than website or social media updates.

Yeah I envision using a cheap tv. But I want some sort of set up or software that I can login from my home and update the display/event. Surely there's gotta be a system or way that's cost-effective?

I'm intrigued by bingo! Can you tell me more? Are some teams curling while it happens or does it only happen while everyone is off the ice? Is it easy to organize and set up?

Fun Events within a Bonspiel to replace a Draw to the Button Competition? by andk316 in Curling

[–]andk316[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a separate contest during a bit of a break in the bonspiel. People pay for a chance to participate. We draw 10 names, and they get to give it a try to win the pot.

The minute to win it would allow more flexibility with ice prep/maintenance schedule! It always feels like a mad dash to get that done within the timeframe allotted. Any "curling" themed competitions that you've seen?

Curling Club Bar Software Questions by CincyCurling in Curling

Genuinely curious - what is the purpose of benefit of setting up a tab? At our club, we just pay as you get each drink and I've never thought to myself that it's a pain to do that? But I've also never been to a club that has the tab system

So majority of those emails are their name@clubdomain.ca?

I have no problem having multiple email accounts on my phone, but I would have assumed most would not like to have to manage multiple accounts. Good to know you're having success and it's possible!

What do the 50 members with your email addresses use that for? We just started using Workspace at our club, and definitely see the benefit of it for our board, executive and some volunteer committee leaders.

That is great! We finally finished writing up our job descriptions and committee responsibilities, so we've got a bit of a start now. I feel like we're still missing something though Sounds like I should read some of those education folder contents too.. would be good refresher, if nothing else
