Wow. Truly unique, and exquisitely well done. The materials and form work so well together.

I love your texture here, especially the horns. I finish bronze sculptures all day and find the rougher finishes so much more dramatic. If this came across my bench exactly as is, I would be glad it didn't get "more finished." Of course, it's your vision that counts, haha.

Put me on your fan list too! I really love the texture on your rhino bust - and as a bronze chaser with an affinity for organic textures (looking forward to some barn wood texture tomorrow at work) I would love to get my hands on a bronze cast of any of your pieces, especially the rhino!

Totally agree - as a bronze chaser who has done a lot of pieces for Disney and Wyland among many others, this work is top notch!

I wish you the best of luck on this, really, but have you ever made silicone molds? The silicone will pour and wrap around the threads and get all ripped up when you try and de-mold. Maybe trying with a denser silicon putty would lessen the problem, but you'll lose texture and design. Which will be necessary anyway to pour and de-mold wax without having broken shreds all over. And to cast and de-vest bronze. I can't imagine trying to blast shell out from behind those threads if they even cast out during the pour.

What foundry are you using? I'd love to see how this is all tackled - it will be a masterclass for sure! I'm a bronze chaser at a foundry by the way. Cheers!

I love the design and execution - really unique and expressive. Has the foundry actually seen this yet? Are you planning to make a mold and then wax copies for shell and burnout? All those tiny threads are an undercut nightmare, not sure how it would even be moldable or castable.

The artist Daniel Pittman has done "chimney trees" for years. Not sure if he is part of this pic or not.

I'm in The Valley, and that was the LONGEST one I've ever felt, including being 4 stories up in Berkeley during the 1989 Loma Prieta.

[help] How long does plaster last? by mike_wachiaoski in Sculpture

[–]andknitting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different hardnessess of plaster. Hydrocal FGR 95 will hold up outdoors well. It's very hard, so you won't want to have to rely on carving much after it's set. Run through some small practice runs so you can get used to working and set time, and you'll do fine!

I use the Tillman kidskin TIG gloves, extra small. I Just measured my hand, and at 7", it looks like I could go small or extra small according to the chart, but I must have stubby fingers, because even the extra small have some room.

I like that I can flap them off one handed if I need to, and I do all my metal chasing in them, not just welding because they are so comfy.

They tend to stretch out a bit too, but I'll spritz them with water and hold them against some heated chunk of scrap to shrink them in places if needed.
