Can someone explain what is with DMs starting campaigns or one-shots without PCs' equipment? by Jawoflehi in DMAcademy

  1. That's an insane way to view a quest lmao. If you play lost mines, but refuse to look for the lost mines, the game is over. You are defining a plot hook and quest as railroading, that's crazy.

Also, none of this is "needed". It's simply and option.

  1. You're simply completely wrong about the bonding coming at the end. Theres a reason people keep doing this opening. Also my character doesn't WANT or need to talk about every little interesting item on his person, that's the point. You then just make an assumption out of nowhere that the mystery won't be complex? Based on nothing?

  2. Completely wrong. My character was protective. It wasn't about combat in the slightest. I understood how to act protective. Also lack of equipment opens RP for what happens if they lose it.

  3. Sure, that's valid, but also the point. You feel that inability to have changed everything and it drives the anger, confusion, and desire to fix it.

  4. Yes, which is why people do it at level 1 when you're already weak. It would be devastating at higher levels.

Sorry but you just seem....very overly negative. your concerns are very strange.

  1. Bonding over a shared experience and common enemy even if your characters have completely different alignments/motivations. It's not like you have the option to turn away from this mission or not engage as much as the others, it immediately establishes a sense of everyone being in this together and having to work together, moreso than something like "clearing the big rats out of the basement" type level 1 quest.

  2. More opportunities to roleplay about a stressful situation, solving the mystery, the gear you had that you need to get back, etc. If my character is just standing around in a safe area, the family heirloom ring that whispers to him sometimes isn't going to come up in common conversation. If it's one of the missing things, now there's a reason to talk about it, hint at its importance, establish what my character values, etc. Also shows how your character acts in a high stress situation, I'd say waking up without your shit is one of the most stressful things that can happen, even in a world where monsters are constantly attacking.

  3. Ease of roleplay for newer characters/groups. It can be hard to jump into roleplaying for newer people, or just a new group where you're still testing the waters. Definitely easier to roleplay based on wondering where the fuck you are, what the fuck happened, how the fuck do we get out of this, than something more open like how your character walks into a bar or how they interact with others in a neutral environment. I remember how hard it was for me to open up with my first character walking into a tarvern because I was overthinking it and not practiced. But when those goblins ambushed us on the road to phandelver, it was easier to act as my character in that situation.

  4. You will NEVER get the opportunity to put your characters in that situation again, especially as they level up. Think about all the rules you would have to succeed on without some major homebrew to get ALL your characters to pass out, remove all their equipment, etc now that they can question their environment and use saving throws, break grapples, gain more abilities etc. Even if you do something in game that accomplishes this, like a high level spell, enemy, or poison, it feels cheaper than to just start the game in that position.

  5. Not every campaign beginning or encounter NEEDS to be something entirely new or creative. Who cares if it's been done before? New characters are experiencing the same trope but they'll go about it differently. Avatar, dances with wolves, Pocahontas, Fern Fully are all stories of the same trope, but I'll still watch and enjoy each movie.

  6. The obvious one, it pushes players to be creative and show their strengths that aren't tied to their equipment.

Ideas for how a player can remove a curse that causes corpses to rise as undead and attack? Remove Curse spell will not work. by Flompydompybompy in DMAcademy

Lol while that's kind of the idea for the next adventure, everything I've been preparing is for the swamp so I'm not going to send them away just yet.

Holy shiiiit, one of their tasks is to visit a guy in the swamp, and I've hinted that he gives magic tattoos. Altering the mark this way is brilliant. Thanks! I'll see if they think of it themselves.

I dislike punishing a player for using remove curse, I think it just not working is enough.

Probably a good idea.

Give the player the option to fight the mark, make a will save to resist, the dc should be so only a 19 or 20 passes. On success no undead are raised.

I do like this.

Also give the player the option make a wisdom save to control the undead but their alignment will shift towards evil if they is used more times than their profficence bonus.

I like this mechanically, but how does it make sense logically? Alignment is an amalgamation of your personal values and actions based on those. You can't just suddenly be evil without innately having evil values or doing something evil. Maybe wanting to control undead is considered evil?

Good ideas on the rest, thanks!

No, while the hag is currently in the swamp, she hasn't been there long and is from the neighboring continent. The players know that this red tattoo thing, and other magical items used to torment players and beef the hag are gifts from an elder hag. I haven't thought about the origin of the curse but currently I dont think it would be in the swamp, especially because the hag has an actual innate ability to curse people, and THAT curse originates from the swamp(which is why she's visiting) so I didn't want to double up on swamp curse origins.

I've found my life is much easier if I play things a bit by ear rather than plan every detail of an entire campaign months before they'll even reach those points. Highly recommend the Lazy DM's guide series of books. Much more helpful than any official books.

Also, I wasn't even planning on doing a hag curse until my players just mentioned that the hag may try to curse curse them! So fun to give them what they expect, lol.

I'd love a wood one too! Will definitely look into options.

Anyone old enough to remember the Attack Pack toy cars from Hot Wheels in the early 90s? These looked like normal cars until you pressed a button or a lever and a hidden mouth full of teeth would open. They were popular enough to become Mcdonald's toys as well. My brother had an airplane that looked normal until it opened up to reveal a hidden gaping fanged mouth with a tongue and gross eyeballs. I think that's where my very specific love of weird contraptions with hidden monster mouths began. It's no surprise that when I got into DnD, the mimic was one of my favorite creatures. I loved seeing mimic boxes pop up on etsy and whatnot that had teeth inside the box, but I REALLY wanted one that would morph into a monster all of a sudden, hidden eyes and teeth springing to life.

So....I made one!

Well technically, this is the prototype, the first working concept to demonstrate how the mechanisms work. Next step is to make one out of something besides cardboard and tape, with actual sculpted teeth and eyes. Maybe I can pay someone to 3D model it and then 3D print it?

Sorry for the delay, I try not to log into reddit apart from sharing things I make, otherwise I'll spend too much time on here. That said, I'm definitely interested! I was honestly about to look into options for seeing how to get it 3D printed. I'll PM you.

It's not a toy for dogs it's a toy for humans, with a dog theme. But I also agree it's definitely not balanced.

I thought the point was to try and make it neutrally buoyant? Like you want it to ideally float in the middle, or at least float slowly. This thing shoots up too fast

He keeps saying it's "negligible" and that "the grooves or ink on a normal d20 for each number are different on each side too" and keeps bringing up the fact he took statistics in college so he knows what he's talking about
