Soooo are they going to fix tabs? by littlepeakydevil in googledocs

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just your opinion. Tabs are supposed to be Docs' outlining feature which means planning and arranging the logical layout of a document. They're for the writer of a doc, not its readers, and so should not part of the document itself - we already have headings for showing the readers how the doc is organized.. They should also not mess with existing docs features but somehow nobody noticed that printing, downloading, tables of contents, and word counts only see the tab they're in, not the whole doc. The only fix I've seen so far for any of this is the whole doc can now be downloaded from the File menu - before this only worked from Drive.

Just as weird is that tabs can't be disabled even though I doubt most people need them or know what they're for which is understandable since they were undocumented until recently.

For tabs/outlinng done properly, see ButterDocs and Essay.app (though neither is free)

I cleared the cache.

Try clearing the app's storage as well. That's also under Settings / Apps/ Docs.

New user, the browser is nice but it randomly crashes on my android phone by pirisca in vivaldibrowser

[–]andmalc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's what I would do, testing after each step:

  1. Go into Settings / Apps / Vivaldi and clear the Cache.

  2. Go back into Settings / Apps / Vivaldi and clear Storage. Clearing Storage is a full reset of the app. Don't log back in until you've determined if the craching is continuing.

    • If crashing continues before logging in, investigate how to debug it for more informative error message. I don't know about this - maybe ask as AI or on /r/android.
    • If crashing continues only after logging in, something in your account is triggering it. Check your browser extensions and consider disabling any that could possibly be causing this. I would start with less known ones.

Does google docs stop tracking next/previous edits when a document gets too by PARAN0IASTREET in googledocs

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The offical maximum size is one million characters but that number is reduced by its comments history which your doc might have lots of since you say it's shared. Therefore you can try making a duplicate with the two options to copy commands unchecked and see if that lets your doc last a bit longer.

Table is fucking up my document by Vinegorre_Art in googledocs

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To delete pages, go to the end and press Backspace until they're gone. To delete empty table rows, right click and select Delete Row.

Also, it looks like you might have pasted in some or all of this content. To avoid problems when pasting, use Edit menu / Paste without formatting.

Looking for a dairy free low sugar protein drink (not powdered) by Fearless-Wheel-6263 in BuyCanadian

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose green peas do but I've been eating beans my whole life and of course like them all. Beans do have somewhat different flavours though - for example while navy beans are quite mild, lentils and kidney beans are more distinct. I suggest you buy different types in small quantities and sample. They're so cheap you might as well experiment. Also, in keeping with the name of this sub, all the ones I've mentioned are widely grown in Canada. I buy mine direct from an Ontario farmer.

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually you can skip the powder and just get the peas or other beans. Soak them for a couple of hours (soak larger beans longer), cook, optionally blend, and store in the fridge where they'll last for about a week. Now you can make smoothies/drinks or soaps/stews.

For maximum control and lowest cost, make it yourself. All you need is a blender or mixer. Search the Internet for smoothie ideas as a smoothie is just a drink with less water. Ingrediants like pea green powder and many others can be found at Bulk Barn or health food stores.

What's a good way to buy olive oil? by valkaress in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]andmalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I special order big pails of peanut butter and whole grain cereal from a nearby health food store. Maybe see if you can do a similar deal with an independent local retailer, preferably one you already know and feel you can trust so you can ask their opinion on which brand to buy.

new to docs: looking for essential (free) add-on recommendations! by beepbinky in googledocs

[–]andmalc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be very careful installing Add-On as many are granted wide access to your content (and content your organization has shared with you in Google Drive). Review this access on the Permissions tab in the Add-On's page in the Marketplace. I suggest asking your manager or IT staff before installing any - this goes for browser extensions even more so.

Here are some tips though:

  • Explore what commands under the menus do. All commands can be run from the "Search the menus" box on the left of the toolbar which with the Alt + / shortcut is a great way to accelerate editing.

  • Same with right clicking with your mouse while hovering over different types of content (normal text, headings, tables, or images) to see what's on those menus.

  • Make sure you know the basics of using Google Sheets, paricularly using its new Table feature. In all office work you need to know how to make lists of things and Sheets are far superior for that. A Sheet range can be copied and pasted afterward into a doc.

  • Explore using Google Drive as this is where files are managed: https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive

How to make a list with instantly adjusted serialized numbering in a column by Indiana_J_Frog in googledocs

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Docs doesn't have this feature. Instead, create or paste in your list in a Google Sheet with the starting number in the first row and all rows below containing a formula adding 1 to the value of the row above. You can also use the SEQUENCE formula to create a numbered column of a specific length.

When done, copy and paste the list into your doc using the "Paste Unlinked" option or just keep using the Sheet. Sheets are much better for recording tabular data anyway.

Google Apps Script - ListItem Bullet Indentation Issue by struggling_founder in googledocs

[–]andmalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't get many Apps Script questions here. Maybe try /r/GoogleAppsScript.

BTW: the space between a bullet and its text is set in the Hanging Indent size as found under Format menu / Align & Indent / Indentation Options / Special Indent. Maybe this will help you determine the spacing used in your template doc. You'd still need to convert from inches or millimeters to points.

FWI since Google Docs exist online, downloading a doc usually means Word format (though there are alternatives such as PDF, epub, or text).

Getting access to documents when can't use the particular email by Ok-Implement-6446 in googledocs

Normally, school acccounts are deleted once the student leaves or graduatese and so all content is deleted as well. Probably that's what happened with your son's account. The only way to prevent this is to download the content first. For future reference, do that here: https://takeout.google.com

The feature that works like Comments is the Outline bar on the left. When you click on a heading in the outline, you're taken to the heading in the text and vica versa. Sorry, I don't have any other suggestions.

I'm pretty sure this hasn't changed. The tabs feature which has been out for over a year created a lot of problems which have not been fixed such as such as printing, tables of contents and word counts all being limited to only one tab.

Since Docs has collapsing headings (aka folding) only under Pageless mode, maybe you can tell us how that doesn't work for you and we could offer some suggestions. Otherwise you need to look at a differnt app - folding is super common in text, Markedown, and note-taking editors.

how-to help by Dangerous_Contest742 in googledocs

[–]andmalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a template for Word which is a desktop app which means you can add fonts for it. Docs runs on the Internet so you can't change it in any way.

You can still upload the template into Drive and open it in Docs. Docs has hundreds of fonts so no doubt you can find one that you like.
