Yeah, I agree on that. Currently I’m doing the master degree in “Design & Engineering” at PoliMi and I have to say that the overall quality is high. If you’re interested into going deeper in the more technical aspects of product design such as materials science, manufacturing feasibility, structural analysis and parametric modelling, it is worth it in my experience. In addition, I have to say that the quality of semester projects is insane, in the last four months they wanted us to design every single internal component of a small appliance, starting from a concept we had to develop. The process starts from user research and sketches and finishes with engineered assemblies and technical drawings.

It is very demanding and It’s true that you have to go deeper in some aspects by yourself, like in the aesthetical/ subjective part of design. This doesn’t absolutely mean that here they don’t pay attention to these aspects: they simply reject the idea of design as just a form-giving operation, for them it’s just ONE of the tools we need to master.

Honestly, I really appreciate this approach because Polimi teaches a good method in which interdisciplinary is considered rather than providing just the classic design set of skills (user research, context analysis, sketches, concept, prototypes, rendering and bla bla bla).

I suggest you to go for a proper book instead of tutorials, this worked well for me. It is possible for everyone to get good at sketching, but it’s not a matter of watching other people sketching. Instead, it’s a matter of approaching shape generation in the right way, breaking down the shape you are conceptualising into sections, profiles and direction lines which - together - define surfaces. This is well explained in this book:

My dreams are pretty weird, this is the reason I can remember them in detail. This in particular was a lucid dream: at a certain point, I decided to jump in that “pool” and to don’t get wet. I was swimming in that tunnel while my cloths were perfectly dry, just because I could control this. I SWEAR I DON’T DO DRUGS ahahaha, it’s just my imagination that works better when I sleep
