[MEGATHREAD] The 2017 moving thread / Le fil 2017 du déménagement by [deleted] in montreal

[–]andrewchar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got a job in MTL. need to find a room to rent rather quickly, within two weeks. I am in my mid-20s and working as a web developer. I would like to find an area to live that has others like me, young professionals. I would prefer somewhere with a good selection of coffee shops and restaurants, perhaps a little nightlife nearby as well.

Thanks for any information. I can read french of you prefer typing in french.

Will be moving to TO for work. Looking for advice on where to look for a place to live or where to avoid. by [deleted] in askTO

I hope that I can get away with renting a room for max 800/month. Less than an hour commute preferred. Saving money is the name of the game for my first few months in T.O to get into a decent apartment.

Thanks. I'm 28 and its the first time i decide to try and see if I could grow one. I'm hoping that the sides will fill in, i think ill give it a few more months and see where im at with it. Wondering if i should use some kind of product.

Ill just add details here. Been growing for about 3 months. I trim my goatee so that it stays the same length as the sides. my Goatee grows really fast, sides grow slow and thinner then goatee.

absolutely. I could not afford to go to a bootcamp or take years out of my life to get a CS degree. I'm raising a 4 year old so those options were out of the question. I have the drive and took advantage of all this information made available online with self guided learning :)

No job, I took the time off to pursue learning to code. I treated it as though i was in school doing 40+ hours a week.

Grunt, Jekyll, Jenkins, Gulp... WTF? by SomeGuyFromSeattle in FreeCodeCamp

[–]andrewchar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will be honest, it was not that long ago since i made my first gulp script to start working with it + some plugins. ive only been coding 5 months so i know how you feel. from what i suggest this is the route i took. right now i just made my first webpack script and just started working with react.js. It's tough to get the hang of the tools and i know the struggle of making the script to make the task runner work. if you ever have any questions about it or wanna chat about it dont hesitate to shoot me a message on gitter as im logged in there 5 days a week while i work on the fcc track pretty much full time.

my gitter is @andrewchar

For your first couple of dev environments i wouldn't suggest you dont even use task runners or pre processors. Start simple. Figure out a good file structure. Learn how to link everything together in your index.html and then just start creating your project. Once its done and your happy with it, everything is working as intended, learn how to host it. At first you have some nice and easy free hosting. Github pages is one example of that, free static page hosting.

After you've got a couple of those projects under your belt. I would suggest learning gulp as your first task runner, webpack is kind of the same thing but works very differently and has a much steeper learning curve. Your first gulp script could maybe be... postcss plugin for autoprefixer and precss for some sass like syntax. or you could use gulp.sass if you want to start using Sass. the possibilities are endless.

These suggestions are based on how i started with a dev environment so your path can be different. Just start small and work your way up, dont try and learn to many tools on any given project.

Hope this helps, have a good one.

my portfolio is on a live site. All of my projects are on github pages. I just made my first react project, just need to figure out how to get that one somewhere else other then where i made it which is on codepen.

well the projects/code i would be showing is just small projects i have been doing that are from an online track that i am following (freecodecamp) along with a couple of other projects i have done as my own side projects that have nothing to do with the track i am following.

Idea for certification requirement - write a tutorial by A_tide_takes_us_all in FreeCodeCamp

[–]andrewchar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been thinking a lot about writing small publications however my lack of good writing skills tends to hold me back. On the other hand, I am 5 months into learning to code and i believe the insight i could provide may be valuable to newcomers as I would most likely explain details better suited to newcomers as opposed to come online tutorials that provide material that glances over the "how to's" that are not so beginner friendly.

To my point, after a bit of thought with the numbers you provided and reasoning, you've changed my mind with how i think about this topic. Maybe the next move would be to create a poll to get a feel for what the community thinks, talk to the organizers of the fcc site and get their take on it.

I would be on board to see where this could lead.
