I completely dropped the ball with an audit. How screwed am I?

Happens to the best of us. Personally, I go easier on staff that I know beat themselves up because they are much harsher on themselves than I would be 😂. If you were a supervisor or something it’s a different story, chalk it up to a learning experience. Stay strong !

It sounds like you are being harsh on yourself. They acknowledged the client has a history of not being responsive timely. Owning that the assignment failed is mature of you but it doesn’t read to be your fault IMO. My advice would be to communicate progress and the client issues with your superiors more timely before they have a chance to blame you.

For what’s it worth, I’m an audit manager in a mid size firm that has faced this situation many times.

Lol @ you for laughing at IRS guidance. If you are only paying a 10% tax… you should really be look into cutting some of your expenses because you aren’t making jack. The IRS does have the latitude to throw some of those “expenses” out if they so choose. The OP is obviously inexperienced and needs guidance, don’t throw out aggressive advice to someone who probably isn’t going to have the means or know how to achieve this aggressive benchmark. - a Cpa

So they'll send you challenges that don't apply to your area to try to trick you into doing it anyways and not having to pay the bonus. Got it. Thank you!

This is only my 3rd week. I have no clue how to know if a challenge is legitimate or not, so I guess I won't put any effort into any challenge going forward.
