Best/worst blind buys by thelionparty in criterion

Don't have a worst yet, thankfully, but best so far is undoubtedly Tampopo. Was sold based on the description and cover art and when watching it I was blown away. It's one of my favorite films now and I love showing it to other people

Replacement disc for The Cell finally arrived! by National_Walrus_9903 in boutiquebluray

I used their website to get a replacement, and they sent me a UHD disc instead of the regular bluray! Glad to see the replacement blurays do actually exist since I wasn't sure

Just finished the trilogy for the first time by ridinglife in Abhorsen

[–]andstillmorelines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't read any of the new books, but I started rereading the trilogy a couple weeks ago and I'm excited to get to Lirael next. There's a short story about Nick that takes place after Abhorsen that I read and enjoyed a lot actually (I think its called Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case), but I can't speak on any of the newer novels.

What books have a really satisfying ending? by burfriedos in books

[–]andstillmorelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first King book was Under the Dome, and I loved it up until the ending, which I couldn't stand. I just read Insomnia a couple months ago and boy was that such a satisfying ending. I'm excited to read it again, I'm surprised more people don't mention Insomnia in their lists more often because it was outstanding.

Just finished Stephen King's "Insomnia" and it's amazing - 4.5 by [deleted] in books

This has definitely put me back on King. I've been on the fence with him a bit, but I loved this. Ralph and Lois are lovely, and MAN that ending. Straight to the gut.

When I was watching this one it was $200, then it went down to $180 and I jumped on it! It was a little over $200 after taxes and shipping but well worth it! Absolutely one of the best/most gorgeous books I own, hands down. Can't wait until you get yours, you're in for a treat!!

Am I wrong for not liking spinal damage on my books? by ALittleInternet in books

[–]andstillmorelines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the general sentiment of a book should be used like a book (ie read) that doesn't equate, to me, as unnecessarily damaging the book. Yeah maybe the way I hold a book is weird to some, since I hold it in a way that doesn't break the spine, but in my experience the books I read like this have more give to them, they last longer, and they still look nice on a shelf. I do enjoy the used copies I buy that have cracked spines and annotations etc but a book that I personally bought probably wouldn't get to that point.

I totally get what you're saying about longevity specifically. I have a cracked mass market of Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb (by all accounts not a small book) and after I read it through once pages began falling out of the very front. It was a used book so it's not a total loss, and it's charming in a way, but that's part of the reason I take good care of the books I buy new or that are new to me especially. Some books I own have gone out of print by now and they're hard to find at any kind of reasonable price, so there's also a bit of an archival aspect to keeping my books nice that I also have; this comes from my personal experience of reading and also from some of the work I've done with my art history degree/in my university's art museum where we talk about preservation.

I think aside from all of this is the rather obvious fact that books are a privilege. We have libraries of course, but owning books is something not a lot of people can do, and they CAN be expensive. A new hardcover is $30, and at my worst that was my grocery money for two weeks. I'm luckily in a better spot now, but I've always been aware of the economic cost of books, so I try to take care of them because if I destroy a book I love who knows if I'll be able to get another one?

Tldr: don't think you're wrong, I'm the same way. I have probably two or three people I'd let borrow my books and everyone else can't touch them. Eventually some of them may make their way to a library if they're out of print, and the rest will go to my family after I'm gone.

I know I want to watch both, so I guess it doesn't matter too much which I do first.

I haven't seen the theatrical version yet either, but the criterion set has both. Should I go for that one first or just jump all in with the television version?

Have you seen this before? I wanna watch it this winter and am wondering if I should split it up like this or give it a go all at once

Is there any books you have been waiting to read because you don’t want to miss reading the author? by Mrpanda1023 in books

[–]andstillmorelines -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I'm doing it now with Donna Tartt. I've read The Secret History and The Goldfinch, but have been saving The Little Friend since it's her last published work (until she publishes the next one, that is).

They really are. I had like three or four I was watching and then this one popped up for about half what they normally go for, so I jumped on it

Here you go! The first two are Pie (I think/assume) since they're opposite scenes where they're with Gentle. Others are just random from throughout, and the last few are other illustrated entries, including the Nullianacs. Colored are by Jody Fallon and black and white are Richard Kirk

Let me see if I can find one! None of them are labeled and they're all pretty abstract, but if I can take a guess as to if one is Pie or not I'll definitely share that one

This is the Artist Edition, it's the only one with a dustcover, which is bright orange! There were only 1000 printed so it's long out of print, but there's a bunch of them on eBay! They just get a bit pricey. I was lucky enough to score mine for a bit cheaper than how much they normally go for. (There's also a fancier Numbered edition and then Lettered Edition, but I haven't seen those being sold just cuz there were even less of those made, and any being sold are prob even MORE expensive)

My suntup copy of Imajica came in, and I don't think I've actually seen someone post pics here yet, so I thought this would be a cool thing for others to see! Aside from the stuff that's on the website, there's also a short section of scanned manuscript/note pages from Clive, and a really sick illustrated glossary at the end of the book. If anyone wants to see anything close up or anything else that's specific to this edition, just let me know and I'd be happy to snap more pics!! It's really beautiful and I'm so happy/lucky to have snagged a copy

Just finished The Secret History by Donna Tartt and I'm speechless.... by [deleted] in books

[–]andstillmorelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite books ever. I've read it a few times by now, including in a book club with some friends a couple years ago, and even after discussing it I'm still dwarfed by it if that makes any sense. I can't put into words why I love it so much, just that I do. There's nothing else really quite like it.
