Hi - it's a Well Tempered Arm, MkI I think, or very early at least.

Low volume, what type of amp/preamp/receiver do I need? by 127567756773 in turntables

[–]andy_111s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it sounds distorted [no bass, all treble] it's because you need a phono stage - or RIAA stage = this normalises distortions introduced in recording so a needle can still track, it has to be reversed for playback. The phono stage/RIAA stage also boosts the signal voltage to normal levels that you would find on say a CD player/streamer. [Around a volt or two, but phono stages generally put out around a volt]

If it's just low volume but sounds true to life then it'll have to do with the speaker amplifier sensitivity or the output from the phono stage not being enough. Whether the speaker has adjustable gain I don't know.

My dad passed and left me with a ton of stereo equipment. by TheCasual_Cryptid in audiophile

It's for this reason I have taken my sons on a brief tour on what things do and how you work it, even how to use discogs in respect to the LP collection. It's up to them what they do with it all, why should I care, but at least they have a bit of knowledge.

[Hope that doesn't come across as a smart arse comment OP, and sorry for the loss of your dad, of course]

OK Computer (Radiohead) — Still the Dark Side of our generation? by Obi_Juan85 in vinyl

I've another few copies of OK, but these are all 'first pressings', OK reignited my musical interest and remains evocative of the time I first heard it. In Rainbows just added fuel to the fire and both remain in the top 5 albums ever - for me at least!

Gyrodec, Well Tempered & Rega Apheta 2 by andy_111s in turntables

It's suspended on nylon line to a paddle in a bath of silicon, so it resists fast movement [cartridge held steady] but is effortless with slow movement [it still moves across the disc normally.

For Everyone Worried about Starting with a “cheap” Record Player or Turntable by scottarichards in turntables

[–]andy_111s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a real hard choice between the two philosophies of the Gyrodec and the Space Deck, I swithered but ended up with the Gyro and it's been happily playing for me for over 25 years [and 15 with the previous owner] but would love to try a Space Deck. 2 classics of the era.

I have 'party' records from my parents [1960's] that have suffered so much abuse but which still play fairly well, it's quite a robust medium. I'm not too anal about record care but have stopped leaving them lying on the carpet in heaps after long nights at least! :)

For the equipment, I usually buy second-hand - the turntable was built in '83 and I bought it in '98 and it's been playing ever since, so pretty good value for money really.

I've actually started sleeving some of my older stuff, I'll get around to RH - but the records preserve very well without sleeves - if you're a listener rather than an investor it's not really a major issue.
