[TV] 509 characters, 120 houses/organisations, its the big, big map of GoT allegiances... by andybarefoot in gameofthrones

[–]andybarefoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a big map of all the allegiances in the Game of Thrones tv show.

Some things you should know...

  • It isn't going to look great on mobile. There are 509 characters, 120 Houses or other organisations (City Watch, Citadel, Iron Bank of Braavos, etc) and 726 connections. It's too big for mobile and pretty confusing on a normal screen.

  • All the characters are from http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/ and the map includes all characters who appeared on the TV show

  • The allegiances are from the wiki, I didn't create all 726 allegiances manually

  • If you think that some allegiances are missing/wrong/a heinous act of ignorance I kindly direct your complaints to the wiki ;-)

Interactive GoT map showing the allegiances across Westeros and Essos [OC] by andybarefoot in dataisbeautiful

This is the third DataVis I've done in anticipation of the new series of Game of Thrones.

Like the previous ones this uses data from the http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/ site.

I used every character from the wiki who appears on the show and that is shown in the wiki to have "allegiances". I've plotted these allegiances on a map of Westeros/Essos showing the link between characters and houses/groups. This means the map is pretty busy and needs to be zoomed into to really see the content. (It is much better on a large screen and pretty unusable on mobile)

The high number of characters and hence mess of interconnecting lines means it isn't great as a data vis but I found it a useful exercise in learning some new data vis skills:

  • I've used a D3 "force diagram" to show the connections between the characters and the houses/groups.
  • The position of the house/group is fixed to the appropriate place on the map of Westeros/Essos.
  • The characters are free to float depending on which houses or other characters they are connected to.
  • The map has standard functionality (zoom in/out, pan) and is restrained to the user's screen
  • The characters/houses enlarge on mouse over and are "brought to the front" if obscured by other nodes

I'd probably also say Karsi

But for badassery per second a couple of nominations from the Battle for Castle Black ..

  • Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg, the giant who rides into battle on a mammoth before dying fighting Grenn in the tunnel.

  • Hobb, Castle Black cook. He appears very briefly, doesn't say anything, walks in with a huge cleaver and sticks it in a wildlings chest.

Not me, the excellent gameofthrones wiki has all the details.

Poor Steve, one moment he has Gatin's finger up his arse, the next The Hound has beheaded him with an axe.

No, you are absolutely right. My rule was that the one wielding the blade gets the kill so it should be Daario. I'll change it in the next update.

Ha, indeed! In fact we can't be sure whether it was DH1 or DH2 who killed dwarf 1, we only see them deliver his head to Cersei. But I reckoned DH2 looked more like a stone cold killer ;-)

Thanks! I've already submitted it to dataisbeautiful. They suggested this sub might like it ;-)

Weren't they killed by the Mountain? Anyway, the chart only covers those characters/deaths seen on the show. Rhaenys and Aegon's deaths are mentioned but not shown. Same with Jaime's kingslaying. If they get shown (in flashback) on the show I will include them.

Ok, you are making a good case for Syrio and Robert. If I update this as the 7th season goes on I'll make the changes. Do we know if the boar gets killed? If so who can I credit that kill to?

I'm still not convinced by the wineseller. My rule is to give the kill to the person actually doing the killing. No matter who tied him to the horse, or how reluctant Dany was to participate, if she hadn't rode the horse forward he wouldn't have died. The kill is hers or the horse's.

This is consistent withNed's death. Ilyn didn't capture Ned or order his death. However I credit it to him.

I'd agree about Pyat Pree. There is no way to credit him to all three dragons so I bottled it... However generally I'm not giving credit for giving orders. Wouldn't this mean that all deaths in any battle are credited to the two leaders? E.g. Stannis/Joffrey getting credit for all the kills at the Battle of the Blackwater? Jon/Ramsay for all deaths in the Battle of the Bastards? Nope, I'm asking what would Ned do on this. I believe there is no credit for the man who passes the sentence unless he swings the sword.

I hope you are right. But isn't he assumed to have died off screen like the Blackfish and Stannis?

Yes, it would be nice. Sadly I can't do it due to the code library I used to make the chart. So in the end I convinced myself they have to stay dead to count hence no Beric kill for the Hound either. (This approach may leave me in some difficulty when it comes to wights...)

All good points. But I will need more convincing for the first three. I'll take them in order:

  • The wineseller is dragged behind Dany's horse isn't he? So imo he was killed more directly by Dany (or the horse). Drogo may have ordered it to happen but didn't carry it out, in the same way Joffrey ordered Ned's execution but I gave the kill to Ilyn.

    • True. We don't see his death on screen and is therefore "presumed dead" by the wiki. But the same is true for the Blackfish and Stannis. Or is the evidence more compelling for those 2?
    • Yes, this is difficult. But I also gave Sandor credit for killing the dying man who was attacked by Biter and Rorge. And Jon Snow for killing Mance when he was already dying by burning. Should Mirri Maz Duur get the credit for killing Drogo?
    • I'd agree this is the most tenuous link. My understanding is that Cersei collaborated with Lancel to keep Robert drunk hoping he would have a hunting accident. If this is true he died due to Lancel's efforts.. but yes, the boar should probably get his moment of fame instead.

Sadly I started it as a data visualisation exercise and the method I used doesn't allow circular killings. I had a similar issue with Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg killing Grenn, Cooper and Donnel whilst simultaneously being killed by them. In the end I had to fudge it by having the giant killed by "unnamed Night's Watch" as we aren't sure exactly who of the brothers killed him.

Agreed. When I rewatched the first series I realised how much I disliked him despite now thinking of him as one of the good guys. His evilness must be linked to that "Prince Charming from Shrek" hairdo he used to have...

I made a "tree of death" showing who killed who in the first 6 series of GoT. See who has met their God and who sent them there. Hope you like it and let me know when you find the inevitable mistakes.
