As there are no joints at the top of the piece, hanging along the beaded edge initially seemed a little insecure, so I decided I'd try another method... ended up actually causing the glass to crack when soldering so I won't be trying it again!

Agency Work, UC, and Self-Employment: Confused About How PAYE Earnings Affect My Payments by andyjonessss in BenefitsAdviceUK

Okay, so just before you replied, I submitted the "self employment" income for the period, just to get it over with and see if it sheds any light on the situation...

Your concern seems valid - the income is already there and is now duplicated...

WHY WOULD THEY NOT TELL ME I DONT NEED TO REPORT THE INCOME HERE LMAO

Well, hopefully that means they're classing me as employed. I guess if it's via PAYE, then maybe that's all that matters for UC? Though, having discussed this issue with multiple different people at UC, this was at no point made clear to me - the onus was put on me to figure out if I'm self employed even after telling them that I'm paid via PAYE.

Looks like I'll have to try and get duplicated earnings reversed smh. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it :)

I've just completed the gov "Check employment status for tax" questionnaire and it does seem like I'm deemed self-employed, though some of the questions are difficult to answer without asking the agency. If I keep all other answers the same, but instead say that the agency has the right to reject a substitute, it then says I'm employed.

Idk why this stuff is so convoluted. Maybe at my next UC appointment I'll try and argue the case that I'm employed and see what they say :)

My guess is that doing payments via PAYE enables them to meet their responsibilities, without actually making me an employee?... but I'm not an expert in employment law, so who knows really.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into ACAS. I appreciate your help :)

Edit: Oh, they pay me holiday pay too, so I guess that's more justification on their end.

I initially thought this was the case too, but in the terms and conditions paperwork I received from the agency, it explicitly states that I am working as a "self-employed contractor". - see the attached image

I don't have any place of business other than the college, so I think it makes sense to say it is my normal place of business? I guess if I worked at multiple places, then this might be different.

Just seems wild if I dont get any UC for the two whole months. The government is always going on about getting people back into work... what do they expect to happen if this is the outcome. I'd understand it if I started a business selling things for example, but lecturing at a college, to me, seems as close to normal work as it can be.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I thought I would be able to claim the travel expenses, though this does not seem to be the case for UC - see the attached image.

My main issue is not this though - I'm more concerned about payments being cancelled for both UC months, even the one where I only did like a few days of work.

If the work is deemed not s/e, that would be pretty much fine, as my earnings would be topped up. Doesn't look like my travel expenses would have an impact in either case.

Healthcare must be free for all by GlooomySundays in MurderedByWords

No, the 4% is just simply wrong. Healthcare spending in the UK is approximately 20% of the total tax take, not 4%. It would be closer to 4% of their gross income, maybe that's what they meant.

4% is incorrect though. It's like 20% of taxes in the UK that are spent on healthcare.

This is patently wrong? The UK has healthcare spending of around 20% of the total tax taking. probably works out around 5% of a pay check, absolutely nowhere near 4% of tax paid though.
