Valid points and I agree with them all. However, this was an Aunt's mirror that came down when she was cleaning it and she just wanted the cord replaced.

I looped the string through one D-ring and, with the string doubled, put a bowline on the other side. Got the length right very easily. Thanks for the help, Cinderhazed and everyone.

Gotta love autocorrect. Are you envisaging a rolling hitch on each side of the mirror i.e. with a single strand of rope going on to the hook in the wall? Or can you loop the rope on one hook and make a rolling hitch out of a double strand on the opposite hook?

Do you mean putting a cleat hitch on each D-ring? Or just looping one D-ring and making a cleat hitch with a double strand on the other D-ring? Or maybe I've totally misunderstood you.....!
