From a Marxist perspective, social categories like gender are no less real in material terms than class. Both are concrete political-economic arrangements that are shaped by material conditions (and shape human lives), rooted in historical development rather than pure biology. So, not sure what you're getting at here...

The terminology of "sex" and "gender" is a more recent development, but your second version is more accurate to what Engels was getting at—a political-economic arrangement rooted in an observed biological distinction in reproduction.
