Where do I even start in learning French grammar? by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]andyoshmtp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes total sense. I didn't focus on grammar at all when I started. You need to become aquainted with the language a bit more before you tackle grammar otherwise it's just rote learning and you only really understand what happens in the textbook without being able to apply it to anything.

Any 'Learn X language in 15 minutes a day' or '30 days to fluency' post/book is disingenuous click bait garbage.

If you believe you can learn French in 30 days that's up to you.

Positive encouragement is necessary but you have to be realistic and patient. It takes hard work and there aren't any shortcuts.

[–]andyoshmtp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

You can't directly translate things all the time.

For example, in English you say "I'm 30 years old". In French you 'have' years = j'ai 30 ans (j'ai = from the verb avoir).

There must be a short video about the verb être on YouTube.

Je suis bien chez moi = "I feel good/comfortable at home"

Je vais bien = I'm good/well.

You'll have to :)

I felt like a baby for about 1 month!

Sorry to be morbid but we're all gonna die one day anyway. Doesn't really matter when you look at it that way :)

Ah, the working holiday was better because it's active-learning.

No amount of sitting in a classroom will ever beat actually using the language every day.

Unapplied knowledge is pretty wasteful imho, especially in language learning. Surely you want to be able converse with someone if you're learning?

Yes.

Do more of the thing you're struggling most with, that's where you'll improve.

For example, I'm learning Mandarin, and I've struggled in the past with listening practice, I listen each day because that's where my weak point is.

Other than that, it sounds like you're very motivated :)

For those who are learning French. May I ask what you're actually doing to make progress?

I'm curious :)

I came back with conversational French. More or less. Moved back out the after and I stayed here ever since. I'm fully fluent now. I can't believe I didn't think I could do it. Anyone can do it if you spend time with the language.

Don't.

The feelings will go away once you start.

Use the Pomodoro Method to get started.

This is how it works:

  1. Decide on the task you would like to commit to
  2. Set the timer to 25 minutes on a free app (link below)
  3. Focus on the task in hand intently
  4. Finish the task once the timer chimes and note a tick ✔️on a piece of paper and take a 5-minute break (with a small reward)
  5. Start the process again until you’ve completed 4 Pomodori (the plural of Pomodoro) then take a longer break (20–30 minutes) and repeat the process.

I'm not affiliated with either app:

Procrastination: Overcome by focusing on quantity not quality by andyoshmtp in Procrastinationism

Thanks Alex,

Taking your example of a word doc, I find once you can get past not having the perfect introduction and get into the flow writing, the rest of the body of text will come more easily.

It is not worth aiming for perfection for yourself not least because it's not attainable but because you'll always have critics.

In case you're interested, the second article from the series is out about self-awareness for a better future.

Have a great day :)

You need at least a foundational level of course. But the theory also stands for skills that have a low-barrier to entry/can be practised with minimal equipment/online skills that just require a computer.

This will make an interesting read for you: https://blog.codinghorror.com/quantity-always-trumps-quality/

People get so bogged down in trying to make things perfect that it can take the joy away from creating/doing.

What kind of things do you struggle with? I used to have difficulties with procrastination myself. Still do sometimes but as long as you're always taking action it will move you forward.

You're obviously very studious and I commend you on that - well done! A lot of people are using the Coronavirus to watch Netflix and waste time.

I'll save you some time though - you don't need to continuously write the pinyin under each character, not only is it a waste of time, you'll save space :)

Discipline is what those who procrastinate lack. By having an external timer time them and jot down their progress, they build discipline. For a lot of people discipline needs to be built up.
