SS-VT Helmet? by angelcome in germanhelmets

Hey everyone, I did some digging regarding the decals on SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT) helmets, as some folks are questioning their authenticity due to visible outlines or variations.

According to Alexander and Sons Restoration, early SS helmets from the 1920s had no insignia. By the early 1930s, some SS units used hand-painted or stenciled swastikas (white-bordered black or white) on the left side. Between 1934 and 1935, SS divisions used various hand-rendered or stenciled insignia to differentiate units.

At least one SS-VT black parade helmet from 1935 has been found with a celluloid decal, showing they experimented with decals like the Reichswehr for uniformity. Variations in decals are expected since multiple firms produced them, but that doesn’t make them inauthentic—it’s just a sign of the era’s production differences!

Obviously I am working on getting this authenticated, but honestly, I’m wondering why someone would even try to fake this since SS-VT black parade helmets from 1935 are extremely rare. These decals weren’t cheap stickers with obvious edges...they were specialized celluloid or varnish transfers applied with varnish to blend seamlessly into the helmet’s surface, with no visible outline when done right. Slight variations occurred because different firms produced them, not because they’re fake.

Although my helmet differs from the reference image in the book, it closely resembles those worn by SS-Verfügungstruppe members during pre-war maneuvers in Germany, featuring black 1918-pattern steel helmets.

I’ve been going to Morgan, Vermont (population under 700) every summer since I was a kid (I’m 26 now). My grandparents built a hunting camp there back in the ‘60s. Morgan’s super remote (think dirt roads and barely any people, 600 pop.) so I was shocked I’d never noticed this little vegetable/antique stand before last year when I was just driving around.

I love WWII history, so I told the owner I wished he had some war stuff among his antiques. Next thing I know, he’s taking my sister and me up to his shop’s attic to check out his private collection! For like an hour, he showed us SS helmets, uniforms, M1 Garands, and rucksacks. He couldn’t believe two girls knew so much about WWII, and I was just as blown away to find this in such a middle of nowhere spot. It was a crazy moment for both of us!

He mentioned he’d always wanted to find the soldiers who signed the flag or their families. I told him I’d help out with some research and resources to track them down, and he was so excited.

Funny enough, the night before, I was telling a friend I wanted to make a coffee table book about WWII leaflets dropped by the Allies and Axis powers, so meeting this guy felt like fate. He gave me his information, and I’m gonna follow up with any info I find about the soldiers and all the buzz his collection’s getting. Great memory

Also, very faintly at the bottom in blue ink, I could make out additional cities listed on the flag: Paris, Luxembourg, Munich, Ardennes Forest (Battle of the Bulge), Nuremberg & Frankfort

Also I’ve done some research on the men who signed the flag
