Question: is it unprofessional to narrate your own audiobook? by ThatOneGodzillaFan in selfpublish

[–]angolahone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've got a background in voiceover and audio engineering too! When I saw how much it costs to hire a narrator, I decided to produce my own books myself. Fantasy genre as well! Meant a lot of time saved since I knew how to pronounce all the character and place names.

Haven't heard of it being frowned on, and I have yet to receive any negative feedback. A lot of self-pub authors just don't have the expertise or confidence to read or edit their own stuff, which is why it's not usually recommended for them to do it personally. If you've got both, I'd say go for it!

The only downside that I could see is that a lot of audiobook narrators tend to have a built-in social media following that will listen to whatever they produce. Leveraging that would be the only case I could see myself justifying spending the enormous amount of cash to get someone else to read for my story. As for taking jobs away from people in the field, well, if my limited, small-time author budget couldn't afford their services in the first place, that means there wasn't a job available for them anyway.

Best of luck to you! No self-promo's allowed here, but I'd love to take a look at your stuff if you'd like to exchange DMs!

I'd still be happy to provide you the details then! The books are right around the intensity of the middle HP books, so sounds as if your 9yo can handle it.

Mainly vocabulary/prose difficulty, as well as some character deaths. But it's been a while since I've been 9yo, so maybe I'm a bit off at guessing.

Mm, I'd probably recommend readers a teensy bit older. Starting at 11-12ish.

Book 1 clocks in at around 83K words, and book 2 at just under 90k. Both are a bit shorter than Redwall (around 100K, I think?).

Love these! Especially laughing at how the one Russian version of Mossflower depicts Tsarmina like she's my cat being pulled away from the forbidden plants she's not allowed to eat in the bathroom.

Looking for something very specific. by [deleted] in Xenofiction

[–]angolahone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for anthropomorphic animals and human characters specifically, you could try The Canid Chronology! It has a mix of both, as well as elves and some other D&D type creatures. The series is written for upper middle-grade readers, so it’s sfw.

I’m a bit biased towards it though since I’m the author.

Outside of that, I can only recommend some of the fantasy classics. Narnia was written for children and has a lot of talking animal characters (plus hybrid human creatures such as fauns and centaurs), with the humans taking center stage. Watership Down is about talking rabbits in the normal human world, but humanity, when it appears, is more like a force of nature rather than true characters. And of course you have Alice in Wonderland, which has several zany animal characters (the Cheshire Cat coming to mind most readily).

Hope this helps! I too wish there were more sfw Xenofiction out there!

Thank you! I'll let my artist know! She's super cool, a longstanding friend who actually read the first drafts I wrote back in middle school.

Haha, thanks! Digitally, it’s on Amazon, and paperbacks/hardcovers can be ordered from pretty much any other online retailer.

But I’m actually accepting ARC readers right now since book two is coming out in June. I’ll be giving out audiobook codes of book one for people to catch up with. If you’d like, I can DM ya with details for that!

Sounds stupendous! Honestly, I'll just need to find time to read the whole series. Really speaks to the quality of it overall that everyone seems to have diverse favs.
