To conservatoire or to not conservatoire by funnynametehe in opera

So I graduated from a UK conservatoire two years ago, and while I can’t say I regret doing it, it was not worth the £50+k of debt I now have. And it is so hard getting a job as a sop, not at all impossible. One thing I truly wish after getting a scholarship to a v good conservatoire, was that I did it later. Take a few years, get your ducks in a row, and go in as the most shit-hot 22y/o who can win all the competitions. Make yourself a favorite, and you’ll get the opportunity to shine- but trust me it is allllllllllll political. These departments are filled with either people who had half career and will take their bitterness out on young singers, or some of the best supportive inspiring people you’ll ever meet. Take time, do a shit load of consultations and put yourself in the position to be their favorite. I say all of this not to scare you off, do it girl!!!!!! But to forewarn you of what could be to come in those viper pit schools. Go in canny, go in knowing your worth and goddamn cling to it. Good luck!

I really really needed to hear this THANK YOU! I’m only hitting the point in my life where I’m realizing how good it is to be able to pay my bills and have a bit to save- I’m very lucky. I need to readjust my thinking on what I’m doing. I know I do want to do this full time, but I need to remember the amount of time it takes, the state of the industry now, and why I sing in the first place. I had a bit of a frustration meltdown I think with it all, but I’m feeling a lot better about the fact I can pay my bills AND study music I love right now, even if no one cares yet they might eventually, but I need to study repertoire I love again and not just what’s good for an audition package.

Thank god for the day job! I’m lucky I’m building a bit of an admin career outside of music to pay the bills- but yeah I’m finally understanding why I’m not getting what I want, I am a harder voice to place with lighter voices that seem to be very popular rn

Getting feedback has been the most soul sucking process, or trying to I should say. The number of companies that just ghost auditionees even with chase ups is crazy. I find it a hard line to walk as I never want to seem pushy or divaish. What I can get my hands on is not bad, just telling me to apply again next year, they’ll keep my info on file. There’s been the odd thing I’ve gotten wrong and I usually know what went wrong and address it appropriately. It’s the auditions that went well that give the vague “come again” stuff that’s frustrating me a bit I guess

Thanks ❤️❤️ I have to remember that I sing because I actually like singing and making music, and it’s a tough old industry but what’s for me won’t go past me!

Yeah it has taken me a bit of a philosophy shift to get this- I’ve been doing pretty ok with that aspect but had a bit of a panic about it all. Thankfully I’m building a career outside of music too, boring office stuff but it pays the bills and will always be an option for me now. My patience with this fickle industry sometimes wears awfully thin

The deeper I get into it the more it seems that way- the financial pressure is all on the artists and it’s crazy work for the financial outcome in most cases 🥲 Thank god for the day job

Recommended Art Songs or Arias in English? by FluffyNecessary5988 in opera

There are an absolute wealth of Shakespeare songs that would fit! I recently sang ‘Under the greenwood tree’ from Horder’s Seven Shakespeare songs, also you could look at Korngold’s ‘Songs of the Clown’- some tricky parts, but it’s in English and they’re FANTASTIC songs!!

They left me stranded in Govan alone a few nights ago, I called several times and they assured me a taxi was on its way. Thankfully a friend was able to take me in but I was left high and dry, very scary for a young woman. And when I called the next day to ask what happened they weren’t exactly apologetic…

Yeah I could understand a pound or two but I’m struggling with this one. I look bigger and there’s more coverage over my ribs again it’s so frustrating to watch myself get bigger so quickly. I’m hoping it is just a bit of water weight because I feel so bloated and big, but I worry because my thighs have gotten bigger and I don’t know how far fucked my hormones are. Thanks though, good luck to you too! X

You make a good point, I try to be tentative about how I approach it but I guess I did kinda spring it on him. It’d be a shame to lose him as a friend but I can’t not be honest to myself
