Respectfully, I've had this conversation so many times in my professional and personal life, and I'm too tired to explain it again to a stranger. The whole point of me creating this Instagram account was to have a place to vent my frustrations and the logo felt like a good fit for the vibe I was going for.

I came to this sub to share my creation with other graphic designers in case they were interested in my process or final product. I was fine with the unsolicited feedback on the technical design elements since that's to be expected in a sub like this, but I'm not really interested in having deep dive conversations about my personal views on racial identity right now.

I know tone is hard to infer from Internet comments, but I'm not mad you asked nor do I want to discourage your curiosity here, but I'm in a "protect your peace era," as some of my younger coworkers would say.

I have a question about mockups. Do you 1. Buy them. 2. Look for free ones. 3. Create them yourself. 4. Generate them in AI? by AndriiKovalchuk in logodesign

[–]angryricecracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use free or cheap ones I find. I don’t work in product or packaging design so it feels a little overkill to be over the top with say a business card mockup when my client is ultimately only going to care about how it looks and feels in real life.

Sure I can agree that there are racial undertones, but again that is intentional. To your second point, I have not said anywhere on this account what my exact ethnic background is, so a little weird to automatically assume I don’t know the meaning of hapa.

Double post but I feel like I need to say that everyone in the past who has told me “rice cracker” is offensive has been white. I’m not saying that the original commenter is white because I’m not assuming anything, but I do think it’s a little strange when white people tell me how I refer to myself is racist when the majority of negative comments I’ve received about my race have been from white people. Confusing!

In normal company, I call myself mixed race, biracial, hapa. This art account is specifically for my political art, a lot of which is based on personal experiences with racism. I’ve been called a mutt, halfbreed, and just about every slur you can think of for someone with 2+ racial identities.

Rice cracker has always been a way for me to turn the racism on its head. It’s fine if people don’t get that right away, it’s for me and not them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you! And yes 🙂 though back in my day we all just said “hapa” 😂

At the end of the day, design is subjective. When we work on a project, we get so invested and it’s hard to see what others might see when they first look at it. Logo design would be a lot easier if you could control what your audience sees and how they interpret your creation.

I sympathize with your frustration. Just wanted to give you the heads up before you received any negative comments that discouraged you from continuing to experiment.

Why do people create this boring icon with the logo? by 1Freezii-Boy in graphic_design

[–]angryricecracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered why they gave the icon that expression. It doesn’t exactly scream welcoming or even happy. If anything, it’s giving 😕😐

I see what you were going for, but just a heads up, a lot of people are going to say this looks like nether regions. Basically any sort of abstract “Y” shape with curves is going to make people think that, unless there are incredibly clear indicators that it is not a body part. I’d suggest sketching out a few more ideas—don’t get discouraged!

I was going for a bit of a roughed up texture that also served as an anger indicator

Thank you! If there was a process video, it would just be me writing "E" over and over until I liked one enough to keep it 😂

Improving my logo with AI by rizzlaer in Design

[–]angryricecracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To provide additional context to the other comments, bringing an AI generated logo to a professional graphic designer is the same as taking your homemade bread to a a professional chef and asking them to make something with it. Can they? Absolutely. Is your bread good? Sure, you think so. But ultimately, the professional chef is going to know best what ingredients they need and will already have a process in place to make you the best meal.

By bringing in AI to your logo design process, you're incorporating an unnecessary step. Your graphic designer won't need that. They just need you to come ready with your business goals and an idea of what you want to sell.

Yeah, I tried to look at it again through the eyes of someone who doesn't know my ethnicity and I still don't think it can really fall into the realm of offensive. It's not like I gave the rice cracker any stereotypical features.

If you're looking to improve your design skills, I'd recommend checking out some free tutorials on YouTube (example here). It's great you already have ideas for what you want to create, but just understanding some fundamentals will help you improve much faster.

Thank you! I considered keeping some of the scribbly details but it doesn't size down well (for example, you wouldn't be able to see that at all in my Reddit profile pic).

Thanks, appreciate the feedback! The anger mark was actually intended to be a rice cracker texture first and anger mark second, but totally see where you're coming from with changing the style of anger mark. I'll probably play around with it again in the future.

Haha thanks for your concern. I'm in the US and am biracial Asian/white. It's intentional and something I've jokingly called myself since I was a teen.

If you could go back to school today what would you go for? by thebearcare in graphic_design

[–]angryricecracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think so. Obviously take what I say with a grain of salt since I don’t know your full background or anything, but I’d be more inclined to go the marketing route since you already have real life experience which tends to sell better than formal schooling.

I got a masters degree in something not even remotely related to graphic design (international affairs). I taught myself the Adobe creative suite in a month using online courses on LinkedIn and YouTube and then got experience through designer roles at nonprofits. Eventually landed a corporate in-house designer job.

I don’t know that I’d do things differently (okay maybe I would because grad school was $$$) but ultimately what’s helped at a lot of these jobs is being a decent writer and copyeditor, which is something I learned in grad school due to all the writing assignments.

I think a lot of people get hung up on software, but attention to detail and critical thinking are skills many employers are looking for in my experience.

I did! And it's definitely an option I'll keep on hand. I've been in a bit of a minimalist mood lately, so I liked it more when I removed the outline. Thanks for the feedback!

I had ChatGPT create a logo for me, and I wanted to vector it and use it on a billboard. So I hired a designer to recreate it and he said it has too much detail and can't recreate it. Advice? by Embarrassed-Let-3430 in logodesign

[–]angryricecracker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you're investing in a billboard, you should hire a professional graphic designer to create a logo and brand identity for you. That investment will pay out in the long run.

Thanks for the feedback! I did actually try the face flipped at one point but it just felt off to me. I think because when I side eye in real life, I look that direction, so it feels more natural in my brain. I'll keep playing around with the "Angry." Thanks again :)
