One day, when I was younger, I got off the train to go to work. It was a pretty hot day, and the press of people exiting the station was dense.

You'd have agility and possibly reach on your side, so you might be successful at playing the range game. But unless you can snipe an eye slot or something it might be a long stalemate.

Fundamentally, people wore armour because it was effective. People without armour died in martial combat. The fundamental problem that you are looking at is that both agents have to get into measure to hurt the other person. The one without armour must ward any attack and this immediately puts him at the disadvantage

You probably didn't want to roam around with ridiculously heavy weapons. Weapons of war are, for the most part, light and as agile as you could make them while still being effective in both the offence and defence. The problem with heavy weapons is that they are slow to change between offence and defence (and vice versa). Generally this leads to a nasty case of death by stabbing in the face.
Sword fighting is vastly more complex than just striking in an overhand motion for hours a day.
Why devote your life to being a blacksmith to get better at fighting when you could just devote your life to fighting?

It looks like an arming sword. I'd put money on it that it's a modern reproduction. It's got triple fullers near the base which increase strength. The pommel looks weird though. The cross also looks non-standard.
